I just went through the ps3 reg process (does it matter I used a usb device rather than a burned CD to play the activation message on my ps3?) and I assume my ps3 is now Divx enabled.

Just off the top of people's heads, what are popular sites or uses for said medium? I can't say I have ever used it before.

Finally, can your PS3 not download files without some kind of torrent?
I mean when I tried to download something earlier it would only let me download to a connected device.

ps3 was divx compatible since update 2.1 over a yr ago, it'll play any .avi you download and burn to disc, maybe usb havent i tried,

what were you trying to download, ps3 in current state, is most suited for just downloading from psn, but it is possible to use it to get torrents also,
    check youtube

Thanks -I was just wondering if http d/ls were possible. Theresvirus issues etc with torrents tho, rite?
I mean would your account details (CCetc) be safe.

Why would the ps3 only play files from a disc and not usb?

Finally, sorry 4 the crap typing (PS3)...

the PSN is completely secure, and even if its not and you do get hacked Sony have to boot the bill. nothing to worry about.

you cant download torrents on your PS3 (unless pay to join some site) you will have to download the torrents on your PC. there is no more risk in downloading torrents than there is surfing the web.

as for playing movies off USB there is no problem. it works with USB flash drives and external HDD's.

When playing files off a USB device on your PS3, it's handy to set up folders on the device called 'PHOTO', 'VIDEO', and 'MUSIC'. Then put the relevant files in these folders. That means when you access the device on your PS3, the content will show up better. However, you don't really have to do this, it's just much more tidy. To access anything on the device, let's say a video in your 'Trailers' folder on the USB device - go to Video on the PS3, press up to highlight the device and press Triangle. Then select 'Display all' (IIRC) and you'll see all the files and folders (e.g Trailers) on your USB device. Always remember though to be in the right section of the XMB (Photo, Video, Music) for whatever content you want to play or copy over as the PS3 won't see it otherwise. (i.e. Photos won't show up when you're in the 'Music' section of the XMB).

Actually you can. noodler try this website. Normal use is free but for extra features you have to pay for the 'Prime' version. I've only used it to download movie and game trailers to my PS3, so I don't know how reliable it is with larger files. Be careful when choosing a torrent as the file may be in a Zip or Rar archive which cannot be opened on the PS3.

If you're using torrents just be sure to read the comments for a file to see if there is a virus, usually someone will report a dodgy file in the comments section.

I play all my divx's off of a USB stick on my PS3 using the aforementioned process posted above. It plays aroud 90% of the divx's I throw at it but it does refuse to play the odd avi that plays perfectly fine on my PC.

i have the same problem as TinCool. and i still havent figured out which ones will work on the PS3 and which ones wont.

i think most "new" videos work. i havent really being have much trouble with recent tv shows but older ones fail sometimes.

can anyone tell me a way of knowing from the properties of the video if it will work or not?

sorry if i'm hijacking this thread.

Do you have VLC Media Player? If you don't first step is to download that.

Open the file using VLC and then go into 'Tools' and click on 'Codec information'. That can give you some hints as to whether the file will play based on what codec was used to encode the .avi file, but sometimes it's hit and miss. For example, VLC lists some of my files as XVID, in theory they should all play but only some of them do.

As a general rule, if the codec information says 'DX50' it'll play, 'XVID' it should play, whereas DX31 will not play. Copyrighted WMV files will not play either.

.mkv is becoming much more widely used and the PS3 doesn't play that file type so hopefully Sony will add support for that. It's either that or installing Linux on your PS3! (Edit: Yes, and converting them, :D D'oh.)

i got a simple program to convert the .mkv to .avi. it took less that a min to convert an hour show to .avi.

cant remember the name of it now though. sorry

Yeah, started using Mkv2vob recently, seems to do the trick nicely.
