The adminstrators of music, games and DVD chain Zavvi have closed 22 of the firm's stores with immediate effect - costing 178 jobs.

The remaining 92 stores will stay open, with a sale of up to 50% off beginning on Friday, Ernst and Young said.

    Could be potential bargains galore.

And thank God.. they'd be struggling to clearout with 10% off.

will this be in Ireland or just the UK

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,196 ✭✭✭✭Basq

That's what I'm unsure of yet...

But the "10% clearout" in the UK has been applicable here also up until now.

Was in the Sligo store earlier this week... definitely nothing I'd buy with the 10% off but if I can pick up a few Blu-ray's for a tenner.. I'll be happy!

Don't blame me if the 50% doesn't apply here!

Don't worry I wont blame you,the mother got a NDS for Xmas so Might take a look and see if there is anything cheap to go with it.

I wonder if those remaining 92 stores will remain open indefinitely?

Still not sure if the sale will apply to the Irish stores but it doesn't sound as if it will as it's just the UK stores in real trouble at the moment!

    Link...

Oh dear, I predict bedlam in the stores if it is over here too. At 10%, I was stepping over people trying to look around.

There were none when I submitted it;) Tis fierce slow today due to the DB work!

Edit: Just had a look at their website, nothing on it about sales

    Just two words I noticed..
The remaining 92 stores will stay open, with a sale of up to 50% off beginning on Friday, Ernst and Young said.
Two words I dread in any sale as they'll have one or two items in store that aren't shifting at half-price whereas the popular items are still 10% - 20% off.

    Could be wrong though!

Yup. Any time i've tried to go into it in the last week or so its been crazy. I'd expect the same tomorrow :(

Was in Zavvi in Dundrum TC yesterday evening and the place was dead.

Went in with vouchers that I was trying to get rid of and couldn't see anything at all I wanted and left again with the vouchers. But looking at their website earlier it says it's no longer honouring gift vouchers!! Seems a little cheeky just after Christmas when loads of people probably just got them!

:DYeah This has been a big issue for discussion on Boards this past week. Legally they seem to be able to refuse to redeem them in stores even thiough they sold them right up to first week of December. I know as I got given some as a Christmas gift:mad: They are saying that if you bought them in a specific week (27th Nov - Dec 4th or something) you can get the money back by filling in a form they have in the stores and sending it to Ernst and Young. Very Very sceptical about actually seeing any of the value back but worth a try. Sale could be good but at 50% reductions they might just start to reach parity with most other places prices:D Wont buy from them on principle anyway..I would advise you to fill in one of those forms and send it on as soon as you can though; couoldnt hurt:)

Yep, I hate when shops do this, renders the whole thing a completely meaningless term, they could well put up the prices on everything, bar 1.

They weren't accepting student cards/discounts last week either, I presume that will continue

Might head out to Liffey Valley in the morning...

Hi, I just went on to Zavvi (for the first time) and I looked up 2 items but I can't see the price of them? or a "Buy" button?

Also when I tried to add to wish list or login it get the page "Secure Connection Failed"

They've ceased the ability to order from their website since just before Christmas..

Well.. according to this report by Yahoo:
EUK was the company's main supplier and its demise left Zavvi unable to take customer orders. Zavvi's remaining outlets are now set to slash the price of their products by a further 20% to 50% from Friday.

So the majority at 20% - 30% is looking likely.

According to wikipedia, they have 92 stores in the UK AND Ireland left open, so one can assume it's 50% off here too.

I had a gift voucher from last April for €150 for Zavvi and only got around to using it for the first time in November. I normally buy on line or just download stuff now.
Thought I only had €50 left on the card and struggled to get enough stuff for €50. When I went up to the counter and paid for the stuff I had €30 left on it.

Pity it's gone now. Might still check out the sale tomorrow though, but I'd imagine that it's just the tat that's left at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,055 ✭✭✭suppafly

was in there yesterday and didn't really see anything much. might pop in tomorrow if I'm around town and see if the 50% sale is on here too.

They have some really good offers on DS games in Dundrum (though even Game have come down in price recently......)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,149 ✭✭✭✭Lemming

I wandered into zavvi in Dundrum after coming back from Scotland just before new years and was shocked to see such price disparity, even with "sales" & 10% discount.

I bought the Rambo blu-ray boxed set in Zavvi in Scotland; £29.99 (and at this point with a near 1:1 currency exchange). Same boxed set in Dundrum; the lo-lo price of €75 (with 10% off so only €67.50). Even with a sale, can anyone here say "royally f*cked up the ass"?

anybody know if zavvi have a right not to honour gift vouchers? ive heard they dont have to honour the vouchers and therefore the vouchres are worthless! the CAI are closed until monday so im just wondering if anybody has had any dealings in this regard

Has anyone been into the stores in Ireland and asked if they are having a sale tomorrow of 50% off? I have tried to call them but no answer!

Ideo - they are not taking vouchers and have stated that in their press release about going into adminstration. You have to join the queue of those due money!

Well, I said to him if there was 50% off, maybe that's why he said he didn't hear anything, or maybe there is 20% off but he wasn't told yet. Hopefully there is a sale on, some cheap cd's and games would be nice.

20% still isn't great if they want to shift the amount of stock they have in there, and they seem to have a lot! The UK stores get 50% but we get 20? Come on,I'd be in there in a heartbeat of it was 50% off but I'm not going to bother going in for only 20 off.

Well- they have already sold the Irish branches- the liquidators are simply raising a bit of cash prior to cut off dates etc.

If anyone is in there today looking around the games section will you get a quick price check on mass effect, i bought it used in smyths but its scratched to hell and the xbox wont read past 50% on the disk. Mass Effect is going for €15 second hand in Xtravision (City Center Limerick). They had about 8 copies too. If buying, look at the disks before walking away.

at about ten past nine the staff were only putting out the new signs in Cork.
It looked to only be 20% though, games and music hardware not included.

Do you have any idea if they are applying the 20% discount to the offer of 2 Blu Rays for €30 (which was on the go after Xmas).

Any good Box set offers ??

Don't understand this at all. They're finished, they need to get rid of all stock as quickly as possible and a limited 20pc off isn't going to achieve that.
