usually you would feel a coldsore coming on, are you sure it's not a spot?

It's her first ever one, how would she know what it feels like to have one coming on?

Off to the pharmacy with you, ask the helpful people there. You can get these little clear bits of plastic plasters... they look worse than the coldsore though, imho.

In fairness to the OP, if you've never had one before how would you know what it feels like coming on?

I get them a lot and I still get caught out sometimes and wake up with a corker.

OP for the coldsore, get a remedy with Acyclovir in it. Go to the chemist and explain the date predicament to them and they'll give you the best that's available. It should take some of the swelling out.

It's going to feel flipping massive but they're not as huge as they feel on your face.

If the fella's as lovely as you say he can deal with a coldsore, he probably won't be kissing you though!

    Good luck missus.

    I'd reschedule, for sure.

bit random but i always found smearing toothpaste over it clears it up pretty quick.

im sure its a coldsore. asked chemist he gave me zovirax!i cant resedule otherwise i cant see him for a month!!
i couldnt get the things that cover the coldsore.he said put ice on it too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,064 ✭✭✭smileysurfer

No Matter what you put on it , its not going to clear up over night! Usually they take 5 to 7 days to get rid of completly using Zoviorax and other products. If its REALLY bad you might want to re-shedule or else try cleaning it well and then putting some light make up on it for the evening :D

    Zovirax NOW!!

I get coldsores a good bit and its the best cure ever..

If you use it as soon as ya can it should be gone by tomorrow night, hopefully!!:)

Usually takes two to three days for the cold sore to go even with all remedies. The cold sore most probably will make you self conscious and ill at ease on the date so may be wise to develop that awful flue that's going about

Lemon balm and St. John's wort dabbed on the areas where you get the tingling si suppposed to help... dab it on the area a few times daily if the sore gets worse

    Good luck with it

Avoid kissing him on the mouth (or "down there", not that I'm saying anything about you) if at all possible. Cold sores are a variant of herpes and are uncurable. So once you give it to someone else, they have it for life. Luckily not everyone ends up with cold sores, but some do.

Of course, if he admits to getting cold sores, then kiss away! :D

this was specifically why i asked about the nature of the blemish, as i wasn't sure about coldsores but i know this works for spots, it basically absorbs all the moisture out of the area you apply it to, so smear some on it before you go to bed, you should see a good improvement in the morning! :D

ice the area.teabags are supposed to be good too.if all else fails.....concealer!!!

Compeed, the little cover that is put over them. Kinda camoflauges (spelling?) it a little. Don't be embarressed by it. My partner had one the night we met, and that's a year ago. She had the little patch on, and I kissed her, and I haven't gotten a coldsore in years.

If it gets really unsightly, I still say reschedule. Otherwise you'll spend the month after your first date wondering if he was horribly put off by the cold sore, anyway. I hope it goes away, though. What crappy luck. :(

Also, I was once watching a medical program in the States, and this woman (true story), had really bad diarrhea but liked this guy and didn't want to cancel the date. So they went out and she crapped her pants.:eek: They ended up getting married lol. So don't worry, it could be worse and still have awesome results! :D

I usually find that if I apply zovirax every 2-3 hours it is markedly improved within 24 hours. I bet it will be gone by tomorrow evening.

Look, i'm a guy and the only sort of cold sore that would put me off a woman is the type that you couldn't see clothed.

    You'll be grant!

Lolz, I know. The point of the show was she'd been having these mystery symptoms and they were trying to diagnose her illness. I thought they should have concentrated on the fact that she shat her pants on a first date and it ended up in a MARRIAGE. Far more impressive, imo.

OP, you'll be grand no matter what happens, as long as the guy is legit.

I get coldsores all the time and just discovered L-LYSINE. They are tablets and if you take a couple today and tomorrow it should do the job. You can get it in most chemists or health shops like Holland and Barret and it clears coldsores up really quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

Everytinh suggested here is rubbish, except the Lysine. Take three of those tablets for a few days to minimise the severity. Also, go to the doc, get Valtrex prescribed. Its about 500 times more powerful than zovirax. Zovirax is useless and doesn't work (my doctor told me). It only works to a limited extent in the very early stages, and many people do not experience the early stages, they just wake up with a coldsore.

    Lysine and Valtrex.

When the blister bursts and you are left with a bloody scab, take zinc picolinate. Three times a day for a few days. It will greatly speed up the rate at which the wound heals, by perhaps 2 or 3 days.

    Zovirax works for me!

It prevents it completely if I do manage to feel it coming on. If I don't it stops it swelling like a mofo and clears it up completely in a few days.

I forgot to bring some to the States with me once and got one. Holy mother of christ, all I wanted to do was slice my lip off. It would have been less painful.

I've never had a coldsore, have no idea what they feel like. I'm glad too, I'd hate to have one!!

That really is krappy luck OP, I'm sure it won't matter too much, he may not even notice it if you start treating it today.

Best of luck with the date. Just go have fun :D

Believe me...don't go anywhere near anyone with a coldsore....

I was coldsore free my whole life and had a date with a guy I had been looking forward to for ages. When I arrived he had a coldsore. I didn't think anything of it and kissed him anyway. I now get coldsores at least once a year (usually when you are run down).

My date was 8 years ago.............

Once you have the herpes simplex virus (ie coldsore) you have it for life...and it is highly contagious

Hi just want to second that about zovirax, if you put it on every couple hours it works very fast, shrinks it right down. As it heals it will look like a red dot on your lip and a good liquid concealer can cover it. Have to say my first coldsore was much bigger than any ever I got since, like a King Kong of coldsores and I did hide for a week with it.. if it's like that maybe just say you are sick and reschedule with apologies. If he has a problem with that then he's not a keeper anyway.

P.S. There are other brands of coldsore cream that are the same but much cheaper, have used them all and they work just as good.

    Price of zovirax was unbelievable!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

that happened to me before, but if it's only a day in, it souldn't be noticable or have broken out, so the worst it will look like is a spot...Put a patch on to stop the infection and you'll be able to go kissy wissy woo all night.. :)

Oh god do NOT put concealer on it! It will make it SO much more noticeable.
put the cream on and all that and it'll be fine sure.

Cymex is great and really cheap. I put its on constantly but it really helps clear it up.

Maybe I'm a bit old-fashioned or crazy or something, but seriously: is this a big deal? When did immunity from cold sores become a requirement in a partner, and why?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 470 ✭✭Craft25

Zovirax works for me.. especially early on

I couldn't care less if a girl had a coleslaw on first date... conceal it.. go to dark places, sit with only your profile showing.. just be sure to not let it wreck your head and come across like an eejit!!

making a joke about it could get it out of the way early

Lysine for sure. I woke up this morning with neuralgia on one side of my face which is a sign a coldsore will appear somewhere around my lips soon!! When I feel a coldsore coming on or have one I take two lysine, three times a day and it either stops the coldsore from appearing or clears it up quick. Years ago, I got a lot of coldsores and I started taking two Lysine every day and the number of coldsores I got greatly reduced. I did try Zovirax when it first came out but I didn't find it helped me and it made my skin very dry where I applied it, so I had the cold sore plus dry flaky skin!

because it all leads to genital herpes in the end, and we love ourselves too much for that. Thats the stigma anyway.

90% of peopel have the virus(on their lips) so you'd be cutting your options pretty slim

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 231 ✭✭mandysmithers

Do NOT kiss him while you have a coldsore. I get them and I don't go near my boyfriend while I have one. I would hate to think I gave someone the herpes virus.

Also, Lysine is the best thing ever for coldsores. It really speeds up the healing time. I used to use Zovirax, but now I don't bother, I just use lysine.

OP, I don't think your coldsore will be gone by this evening, but it shouldn't be too obvious in the early stages, it will just look like a redish area on your lip. Start taking lysine now anyway, to speed up the healing.

these things are great!! Used them going to a wedding a few months ago when I had a horrible cold sore, you can sort of put a little bit of concealer or lipstick on over them too, to disguise it even more! I barely noticed mine was there TBH! I wouldn't recommend putting concealer on the actual coldsore cos (A) it's important to keep the coldsore clean so you don't get an infection and (B) you'd contaminate the concealer stick you just used, so you could spread the coldsore to other areas of your face.
