If anyone has a good knowledge of hymn, spirituals, gospel music, blues etc. that would have been used by American slaves, chain gangs, oppressed musical types AND the Irish variety of that could they get in touch with me? I need a distinctive song for an art piece. I'd really appreciate it as I want it to be good and I'm unsure where to get this information apart from the net.

I'm unsure if you can get free downloads, but you might want to try www.lomaxarchive.com. (I actually couldn't listen to any samples - maybe something up with the website or songs are stupidly region blocked.)

Alan Lomax was a musical archivist who dedicated over 50 years of his life to documenting music predominantly from the U.S., but also from around the world, including Ireland. His probably remains the most unique collection ever compiled. Some of the songs have been made available via CDs (or maybe individual download) and if you can access some samples you might find something up your alley.

As an aside, if you click on my blog below (haven't updated it in ages) and do a search for 'Vera Hall' it will give you an idea of the just one of the types of music he recorded.

Hey, that's excellent, thank you so much, I know some of his music, it's really cool, but I didn't know about the archiving

    Here you go: http://www.amazon.com/Alan-Lomax/e/B000APTKNI/ref=ntt_mus_dp_pel *

You can listen to a number of samples of Lomax recordings and download individual tracks.

Somebody with more knowledge might be able to point you in a different direction. This is why it might be worth checking out a specialist board dedicated to music.

    * BTW, all the samples for first 'Prison Songs' album listed in the link (there are two) have actually been mixed up with the kids album 'Let's Sing Songs About the Farm'. Hilarious stuff when you are expecting some poignant song about redemption etc, and instead you hear some woman squealing like a pig on old McDonald's farm.

I just had a good listen to loads of stuff on the Lomax Database, and I've found the song I want to use and much more, this is exactly what I needed...I love you! :p
