Iron Man 2 has its villains and, in keeping with the franchise's approach to date, has lined up some very interesting names for the roles. Mickey Rourke, so hot right now on the buzz from The Wrestler, and Sam Rockwell, always so hot cause he's ace, will play Crimson Dynamo and Justin Hammer respectively, facing off against the might of Robert Downey Jr's returning Shellhead himself.

    Two great cast additions :D

Also Terrence Howard is out and Don Cheadle is in as Jim Rhodes

That's great news, loved the first one. It was a bit drawn out, but RDJ played a very charasmatic lead.

Sam Rockwell will be a great addition to the cast, I love him, especially when he is playing a villan.

Really happy with Howard getting the chop, I have a hard time watching him, and I think Don Cheadle is an excellent replacement. \o/

I just can't take Terrence Howard seriously since crash. I'm not a massive fan of Don Cheadle either but I don't hate him by any means.

Two great cast additions, I loved the first one. Should be good

Sounds interesting - the confusion about the Whiplash/Crimson Dynamo has me wondering whether the character in question might actually be Omega Red - he could quite easily be revamped to fit with the sensibilities of the first Iron Man film, plus it would allow Marvel to allude to super-soldier projects without being too obvious a nod towards Captain America...

That'd be an interesting choice. Omega Red was pretty good in the 90s X-Men cartoon.
As long as they keep the tone from the 1st movie this could be a lot of fun.

Yeah, he was originally an X-Men villain in the comics as well but the only time I remember seeing him was an issue of the comic where Iron Man, MODOK (or perhaps MODAM) and Omega Red all end up scrapping. The idea has a lot of potential, especially considering that Marvel seems to be aiming for the feel of a cohesive Marvel Universe with its films.

Does this mean that the Mandarin is out of the movie? Last I read Favereau had finally come up with a take on him that could work without making him conform to stereotypes.

Really looking forward to this, if it's even just more of the same as the first one, it'll be good enough for me!!!

I watched Hotel Rwanda last night. Don Cheadle is fantastic. I enjoyed Iron Man 1. Looking forward to this one now

But I'll watch it anyway...sure it'd be rude not to.

Loved the first movie, looking forward to this.

I really dislike keeping characters but changing actors, this is no exception. I thought Howard worked fine in the fist one.

I think he'd originally planned to make more use of him but at a reasonably late stage in the first film's production decided against using it after discussing it with various high-profile writers working for Marvel. (Mark Millar has claimed to be responsible for moving the film away from the Mandarin as a main antagonist due to his Yellow Peril origins).

To be honest, I'd like to see an antagonist that actually presents an opposing viewpoint to Stark. The Mandarin's usually been used for the "magic/superstition vs science/technology" conflict, but that's not the most interesting conflict available. The comics recently introduced Ezekiel Stane as a brilliant young technologist who works as a mobile high-tech/high-yield terrorist consultant (weird as that sounds) and he'd be a really good foil to use in one of the sequels, because the conflict between him and Stark has several levels - repentant arms dealer vs unrepentant murderer; corporate-friendly vs anarchist; established professional vs young up-and-comer. (More here).

I'm inclined to agree. The Rachel Dawes changeover between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight could've been worse but only because she was a secondary character; James Rhodes is a core supporting cast member so changing the actor is always going to be jarring.

That being said, I've read conflicting reports about this - one one side there were suggestions that Howard was looking for too much money, but on the other side he's denied all knowledge of this. (There again, he's unlikely to just say "Yeah, they fired my ass 'cause I was too greedy".)

In the interiew I read he was talking about the sequel and I agree about the Ezekial Stane idea being interesting but Fraction has been helping out with possible ideas and said thats not one of them.

Emily Blunt is reportedly close to being cast in the forthcoming Iron Man sequel.
According to Variety, the actress has been tipped to star as The Black Widow, a Soviet superspy who wears a skin-tight black suit enhanced by high-tech weaponry.
The Marvel Comics character first appeared as a villain, hired to seduce Tony Stark and kill his alter-ego, Iron Man.
Filming for Iron Man 2 is scheduled to begin later this year, with a slated summer 2010 release date.
Original cast members Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow have been confirmed to return, while Sam Rockwell and Mickey Rourke are in negotiations to play the movie's main villains.

another great cast addition if it happens

Only thing I hate about that movie. As much as I love M.G., they should have introduced her as a new character & written Rachel out.

British actress Emily Blunt is set to miss out on a coveted role in the forthcoming Iron Man sequel - Scarlett Johansson is reportedly in talks to play femme-fatale the Black Widow.
Blunt was widely tipped to take on the part of Russian spy Natasha Romanoff in the follow-up of the 2008 blockbuster.
But The Devil Wears Prada star faces a scheduling conflict, after signing up to act alongside funnyman Jack Black in a new movie version of Gulliver's Travels.
And Johansson is now close to agreeing a deal to step into the breach on the forthcoming Iron Man sequel, according to Entertainment Weekly.

I would have preferred Weisz or Blunt in the role

Nick Fury back for sequel :D

Samuel L Jackson signs 9-picture detail with Marvel. Which puts his whole "Oh, I might just walk away" stance into a different light - possibly contractual wranglings over salary details? (Good on him if that is the case, mind you - given how much mileage Marvel have gotten out of having Jackson in the movies thus far as well as using his likeness in the comics, he may as well get as much as he can out of them while the money's there to be had).

Rourke hasn't confirmed and by all accounts it looks like he won't be in it as apparently he's not happy with the money but he's meant to be a fan and wants to do it.Think the guy has gotten abit of a swelled head lately(both literally and physically). He turned down sin city 2 as well saying its not the kind of thing he wants to do.If it wasn't for Rodrigeuz casting him in Once upon a time in mexico and then Sin City, Rourke'd still be a has been.
Loved the first Iron Man, not in the same league as the Dark Knight(but marvel aren't as good as dc anyway),but it was still a nice bit of fluff. If Downey wasn't in it , it wouldn't be worth watching at all.

It looks like Iron Man will be facing off against a Scarlett Widow, as Miss Johansson has confirmed she has signed on to play the Russian spy Natasha Romanoff in the sequel.

Also confirmed was comeback kid and all-round hard-man Mickey Rourke, who will play Whiplash, after speculation that he could play Crimson Dynamo.

Johansson's "thrilled" substantiation ends the will-she-won't-she rumours that Emily Blunt would don the black cat-suit as Iron Man's anti-heroine, after she was hit with a scheduling clash between this and the upcoming Jack Black funny Gulliver's Travels. The news also puts paid to whispers that newly brunette Johansson was done with "sexy" - as the black Widow's wardrobe will no doubt include some eye-popping all-in-ones.

Iron Man 2 - which will star Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and a new Rhodey, in the shape of Don Cheadle - is set for a May 2010 release.

Sam Rockwell has revealed details about his character in Iron Man 2.

Rockwell will play the role of Justin Hammer, an English tycoon and arch nemesis of Iron Man's alter ego, Tony Stark.

Speaking to MTV the actor revealed: "They wanted to go with a rival for Tony Stark who is closer to his age, and make him American."

He went on to say that his character will have many fighting scenes, though he added that his comic book incarnation bears a striking resemblance to a fellow actor: "That looks like Jeremy Irons. I guess they couldn't get Jeremy Irons for it."

Really not expecting much from this at all.

Above Rhodies cast change, it looks to me like there are way too many characters being squeezed into the film and I am confident that the cross over thing will be a disaster.

I am confident that the cross over thing will be a disaster.

    Basing this on what?

Iron Man is the stand out "non-Batman" movie of its genre and I fully expect Iron Man 2 to be excellent, simply because of the lead actor and his perfect portrayal of Stark.

And the fact that Favreau did a fantastic job on the original, being true to the Iron Man mythology while not being tied down by it. Putting characters first, just like Nolan, and succeeding in making one of the best Marvel universe films ever?

I for one am quite excited about the prospect of this whole "shared universe" millarky. I'm not sure it'll be pulled off well (I have my doubts despite all the very talented people involved), but I think it's an interesting experiment that reflects the genre origins of the films. Besides, there's never really been a shared universe of summer blockbusters, has there? Closed I can think of is the View Askew "trilogy" (of five).

I wasnt a big fan of the first movie, it hasnt aged well with me. We had on awful summer the previous year and I think everyone was glad to have "better films" last year. When i watched it first, i had fun but when I watched it on DVD it was god awful.

It worked in completely the opposite way for me, first time I out I thought it passed me by as a Saturday popcorn action/comic flick. Second (and third) time out, I can see more of the characters developing and the mythology being explored more.

I think the concept of a combination movie is brilliant in that it will finally give a number of series a natural place to end up instead of just imagining another sequel in many tired series.

Former Marvel Comics president Stan Lee has signed on for a role in the forthcoming Iron Man 2.
The series co-creator will play talkshow host Larry King, who interviews Tony Stark on live television about his new black armour.
Lee has previously made cameo appearances in numerous Marvel film adaptations, but his role in Iron Man 2 will be his most substantial to date. He also portrayed Hugh Hefner in the first Iron Man film during a red carpet scene.
Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby created the character in 1963. The superhero made his first appearance in Tales Of Suspense #39, with Lee acting as writer and editor of the book.
Iron Man 2 is released to cinemas on May 7, 2010.

I feel the same about them. It's always fun waiting to see where he's going to appear. His cameo was the only good thing in the Fantastic Four 2 movie. Plus, the one in The Incredible Hulk was pretty good, because it was part of the storyline and fit in fairly well.

I am really looking forward to this film, as well as Captain America and Thor, as they are all laying the groundwork for the big one in 2012, The Avengers.

I'm disappointed that Rhodie is being recast. Don't get me wrong Cheadle is a great actor, it's just that when Howard took a lingering look at the Warmachine suit and said "Next time baby", that gave me spine chills.

Not too sure on Scarlett as the Black Widow. Sure the visual is there but the acting I'm not too sure about. Plus you have to think about the bigger picture and how she will stand toe to toe with the likes of Downey Jr, Ed Norton, and Samuel L. in the Avengers, not to mention whoever is cast as Captain America.

Thought Lee just played a guy who Stark mistakes for Hefner in the first Iron Man, rather than actually being Hefner. Hence the look of confusion when he turns around. (Though undoubtedly he's meant to at least be a Hefner lookalike)
