Dell is to move its manufacturing operation to Poland early next year with the loss of 1,900 jobs at its Limerick plant.

In a statement this morning, the company said it will migrate all production of computer systems for customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) from Limerick to its Polish facility by early 2010.

This was expected by pretty much everyone, but now it's confirmed. Dell account for 5% of Irish GDP. This ain't good news, that's for sure. How do you think we'll plug the gap they leave?

Is this gonna make PCs more expensive? I predict many more MAC users in that case.
Oh, no! What is the world coming to?

By actually getting more productive as a workforce, not demanding pay increases for the sake of it, not taking days off as 'sickies', not charging excessively for items and services etc.

    There's no carcase left.
The Government have boiled it and tried making a magic potion to solve our current economic problems.
That's about all they can do it seems...

This will decimate Limerick. There are so many other companies that rely on Dell for business. Things are not looking good for Ireland.

Its cool, we'll all just get public service jobs.

And actually, will this move by Dell bring a load of Polish people with them i.e. follow teh monies?

A lot more than 1900 jobs, they estimate the final cost of this will be between 10,000 - 15,000 jobs given companies associated with supplying Dell and its workers directly or indirectly.

The Limerick the employees can't walk out with so much as a micro chip without getting caught whereas the security in the Polish site is not as tough, and loads of stuff is going missing. Add to this the fact that the Polish they had over to train went back home and demanded to be paid the same as the Irish workers, not willing to be taken advantage of knowing how well they pay over here.
Screw Dell, I hope it goes tits up for them.

PS. I do not work for Dell, haha.

This has been on the cards for a long time, I don't blame Dell we as a country are too expensive for manufacturing. It wasn't a secret I work in the IT industry and its been common knowledge that Dell have been looking around other countries for around 5 years now.

The Government had plenty of time to come up with viable alternatives but haven't. Their knowledge economy spin has no substance at all and we will now pay a heavy price. I hope to god that Intel and HP don't follow suit but it would not be a surprise if they make similar announcements.

So so much more that you couldn't begin to count it. It's not just the 1900, but their partners/dependents... The ripple effect won't be known for months.

I worked there for 15 months before college, my dad works there, next door neighbour too. Aunt used to... Everyone around Limerick could tell you the same story!

This isn't hyperbole... The city is fucked.

Dunno about HP but Intel are going nowhere (at least until Eastern Europe gets to the same 3rd Level Education levels as us). Dell is an exception as the work they were mainly doing is lower tech manufacturing and assembly. I know a lot of guys here in Limerick that worked for them at some point the majority of the work was taking PC and laptop parts and putting them together. No offense to the people that have lost their jobs but that type of work is easily outsourced. TBH how it wasn't moved sooner is a mystery to me.

been coming for 2 years :(. ireland just is not competitive enough and our great government is to blame for this. sad day for limerick, lets hope something comes in anyway that can give 500 jobs back at least.

Regarding intel, isn't it true that one of their plants here is standing idle, and that the others haven't been upgraded to produce the latest chips? That doesn't sound terribly encouraging. They might move more manufacturing to Israel.

I do feel sorry for the people losing out and I hope they find other work. However something like this should be a wake up call to anyone else still working in a similar type of work. They really should be upskilling and looking for more sustainable work.

They spent a couple of hundred million on the new plant next to Fab24. I finished there a few years back so I don't know what the story is now. IF they don't upgrade the facilities or bring more new work in intending to slowly ramp down the facility then it will still be several years at the least before they can do that.

I've been through big corporate redundancy too mate so I know how they feel. What I was saying isn't aimed at them but everyone else out there in a similar job. They need to start looking to the future.

As sure dont worry, Fianna FAIL has a masterplan. We're gonna build tens of thousands of houses and sell them to each other, it's a sure fire winner, these time next year, We'll be millionaires! And sure are'nt we the richest country in the world :pac:

To be fair, I understand Dell's decision too. Our government allowed the country to become too expensive to do business in. It's a shame for the workers, but I don't see what else you could expect dell to do, stay here and lose lots of money due to our inflated prices?

Yep, and the IDA have it all in hand.
They'll replace the 1900 jobs with 1877 jobs in Leitrim making laffing gas.

On the plus side I'm sure there is a fairly good redundancy package with Dell, so it's a good oppertuinity for anyone who was thinking of going back to college / emmigrating to take some time off.
Still pretty bad for all the workers dependant on Dell who probably will get fuck all of a severence package if even one at all...

What really annoys me is that ok manufacturing is going to be eroded as prices etc go higher but this wasnt helped what the gov did in the last 10 years while pumping up the public sector with wages and numbers, by pumping up the property boom etc. I think ever man on the street with abit of cop on knew that this would only push companies out of Ireland mainly to countries where our migrant workers came from.

Gov policy was completely biased towards property, the public sector then needed wage increases to afford houses so they got it, while the average private sector workers had to look for ever more inventive ways to make ends meat. When you are told you are getting no increase in your review there is little you can do about it, I hope public sector workers are listening (a mate of mine in his fifties is the only one in a large household of public sector workers (auditors, office-gardai, admin etc) and he said 'by chr*st the rest of my family dont have a clue', whether you agree or not is up to you). Limerick is a city I like alot, and I feel sorry that in my time working a company like dell went from being one of the best employers in the city to a company whose time was knocking because of the manufacturing cost base being chiseled away by our own f*cking gov and their social partnership deals etc. social partnership was fine in the early years to put meat on the bone but now it is like an overfed christmas turkey barely able to walk. I am sure Willie o'dea will buy a pint for a few dell workers in souths?

    only just heard the news!!
god the poor people, are the 1`900 all permanant
workers or some temps. and if so would the temps be entitled to a severance package...
this is a major blow to the mid west...

Yea, but what I want to know is, where are all these emigrating Irish going to go? Work is hard to come by in most countries now. Jesus it annoys me how people go into a total panic when they hear the word Recession. Its not that bad. No good time lasts forever, the same as no bad time lasts forever. Just carry on as normal.

pretty tough for all those affected. I wonder will this shut the public sector up for a while before they start cribbing about pay and conditions as usual.

Going on what I saw at Motorola, a lot of the people let go started their own SMEs or went working for other SMEs. The days of working for huge corporate entities are nearly over. If we're going to survive as a knowledge economy we have to be more entrepreneurial and not rely on FDI so much.

Same with DEC in galway (so many spin off companies from ex workers there) and other teclos etc in ireland...

Unfortunately times are now very very different.

Intel and HP are deffo the next to keep a close eye on... :(
