Will Boxer use existing TV transmission masts belonging to RTE to transmit DTT or will it have to build it's own transmission system?

RTÉ Transmission Network Limited should be handling the transmission (as I believe they already do for the likes of TV3) so they should be using the existing masts unless they need to build additional masts.

What do RTE get for providing the service?

The mast at Cork/Kerry border is to be upgraded (Mullaganish), but otherwise no new masts. Coverage will initially be under 80% population and MUCH less geographically.

It's likely Boxer pays RTENL to feed it's own PAY TV & likely pay RTENL for Transmission. but AFAIK they have not finalised a deal yet. It's not feasible for Boxer to do anything else, so RTENL have bought the gear assuming they will signup.

TV3 is technically in breach of licence as they have only 80% analogue coverage, they refuse to pay RTENL to be on all the Relays that TG4 is on.

    Nothing, RTE don't provide it.

RTENL is a separate Transmissions and Networks company like Crown Castle or Arqiva (ex NTL) in UK. BBC had to sell their nework to Crown Castle. RTE simply created RTENL. At some stage they might get bought by someone, but not this year :)

It's likely Boxer pays RTENL to feed it's own PAY TV & likely pay RTENL for Transmission. but AFAIK they have not finalised a deal yet. Boxer have no real alternative.

There is a main transmitter being proposed for Kilduff in Tipperary, near to the Devil's Bit mountain to cover much of south Offaly and north Tipperary. It's planned to broadcast at a max of 25kW ERP. The Boxer rollout plan suggests an operational date by the end of 2010. Also there's a number of new relays proposed, mainly for some towns across Ireland.

As the "upgrade" to Woodcock hill that serves Limerick area (200,000) should have been 10kW / 25kW, but is 100W, meaning even in the city people need a decent Chimney aerial, I'd not hold my breath.

We'll be luck if we see the entire existing network running free PSB Mux by 2010 and who knows if Boxer will even start. On initial applications as positive a gloss as possible is always put on roll outs. Look at time dealy between eircom getting 3G licence and Meteor rolling out and unlike Pay DTT that might make money.

Funnily enough, the RTENL document which gives details of TV transmitters across Ireland (http://www.rtenl.ie/downloads/television-frequencies.pdf mentions Woodcock Hill as broadcasting at 2kW. It's bad form on RTENL's part if they're broadcasting at a significant reduction of this power.

I have clear LOS to Woodcock
13km path and a 18 element yagi with preamp!

I was told by very reputable source that it is 100W.

There may be some mix ups in the numbers. As there are differences between ERP's and transmitter powers as the antenna systems will have gain etc
