Wireless router - Xbox - PC

    Hi,

Just installed a new ZyXEL router so that we can use the Xbox on line. Dont seem to be able to access the internet on my PC when the x box is accessing the internet. Is this a common problem? I'm with BT, 2 or 3mg package. Cheers, Daisy.

Also, can somebody tell me how I secure this router so that my neighbours cant use it? thanks, Daisy.

No, that's not common. Are both connected with an ethernet cable?

Also, it depends what security you put on your network, not necessarily about the router.

whats the model number of the router?

    is it a wireless router?

what is connected with a cable and what is wireless?

The pc is connected by cable to the router the x box is wireless. Not sure what the model name is, bought it about six months ago but only installing it now.

When using both either the PC wont access the internet or the xbox drops its connection. Maybe I should ring bt about this?

Also the only security I have on the router is a password so possibly neighbours are using it too. The xbox asked if we would like to use the eircom or bt connection (the eircom one is not ours).

I know wireless routers should be encripted but dont know how to go about doing this. I am using avast anti virus (not sure if thats relevant) Cheers, Daisy.

afaik the xbox has to be specifically set on the router so that it is in a DMZ and recieves all inbound traffic for the XBOX live and gaming services.

    have a look here:

Putting it in the DMZ is considered the last thing to try, not the first. As your link actually shows

It could be a case that the router is issuing the same IP address to both devices. Have you tried setting a static IP address for the PC ? (Not sure how well you know networking.)

For example, if the PC is getting an automatic (DHCP) Address you may find its getting the address like 192.168.1.2. You could statically set the IP Address of your network card on the PC to a higher IP address, such as 192.168.1.100 (assuming that is the subnet that is being used by your router)

I think Sarcasmo2005 is putting you on the right track. You would really need to set a static IP on your system.

    Here's how to do that:

First you will need to gather some information from your machine.

To get this information, follow the steps below.

    Click on:

    START
    RUN
Type CMD into the box & hit OK
Type: ipconfig /all & hit enter. (Note: There is a space between ipconfig & the /all)

    Write down the following information:

    IP Address:
    Subnet Mask:
    Default Gateway:
    DNS Servers:

(Note: There should be 2 DNS server entries 1 & 2. You will need to record both.) If the DNS Server numbers do not appear here? they can be found by going to the Admin page of your router & looking under the “STATUS” section. They are normally referred to as Primary & Secondary DNS.

You may also get your DNS Server numbers by calling you Provider & asking them for the information.

Now that you have gathered all the necessary information, you will need to know what you are going to use as your Static IP Address, so here’s how to determine it.

Most systems are within a Subnet of 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.254 so you can set your static to anything in between these numbers provided it isn't being used by anything else. It would be a safe bet to run with Sarcasmo2005's suggestion & run with 192.168.1.100

Okay, now you have determined what your static IP address is going to be, you have to set it up in Windows XP\Vista, so here’s what you need to do now.

Go to Network and Internet Connections (Control Panel) networkconnectionsno6.jpg

Right click on the connection icon you use to connect to the internet.
    Then click properties. connectionicongr0.jpg

Click once on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.

Click on the “Use the following IP Address” radio button.
Now put the new static IP address into the IP Address box.

Put the subnet mask number (recorded earlier) into the subnet mask section.
Put the default gateway number (recorded earlier) into the Default Gateway box.
Enter the DNS servers (recorded earlier) into the two DNS Server boxes. Click okay all the way out of this menu.

Congratulations, you have successfully established a static IP address on your system.

I'm pretty sure this is the cause. I've only recently added a wireless card to my xbox360 and found (in the midst of an online GTA4 game) that everytime my other half fired up her laptop, that I would get booted off xbox live.

Might be something with the way the xbox OS handles DHCP.

OK, all was going well until I got to here!

"Right click on the connection icon you use to connect to the internet.
    Then click properties. "

This option does not appear to be available to me, it offers me the following options.

Set up or change an internet connection
create a connection to the network at your workplace
set up or change your home or small office network
Set up a wireless network for a home or small office
    Change windoes firewall setting.

    OR

or pick a control panel icon; shich are

    Internet options
    Network setup wizard
    Wireless network setup wizard
    Network connections
    Windows Firewall.

None of these "seem" to bring me to where you are suggesting?

    Daisy.

    Daisy,

You need to double click the connection icons in the the control panel until you get to these screens.

    ipchangerk2.jpg

    Then follow step 1,2 & 3

    1. Right click the Local Area Connection.

    2. Click once on "Internet Protocol (TCP\IP)" just to highlight it.

    3. Click on the "Properties" button.

Not sure if you intended me to use

84.203.254.34 pref dns and 84.203.255.34 alt dns.

When I did I could not get internet access at all. Went back in and used

192.162.1.1 and 192.168.1.100 and I seem to be able to access the internet from the PC.

Will let you know if the xbox situation is resolved when it is on later. Cheers for your help. Daisy.

No Daisy I did not intend you to use those DNS numbers they were for example only.

You need to use your own providers DNS numbers so you will need to correct that.

You should be able to get them by doing

    Start
    Run
    CMD (Click OK)

Then type ipconfig /all (and hit return).

They are also available from withing the config pages of your router & you should be able to get to that by typing 192.168.1.1 (Default gateway) into the address bar of your Browser.

As a last resort you can get those numbers from your Broadband provider if need be.

Unfortunatley they are not available on either location, unless they are under another name. I will call BT tomorrow as the xbox situation is driving my son crazy, every time he is winning he gets thrown off, and I cant use the PC at the same time. There are a lot of pages on my router so it is quite possible that something like having automatic selection of IP addresses or something called "nailed down" is conflicting with all the help you have given me. Thanks a million for trying though, it is really difficult when you cant see what I am looking at. Will post as to the solution, if I ever find it! Daisy.

Hwy agian, X box is suggesting the wireless router may not have enough NAT connection, anyone know what that is about and how I can fix it? Cheers, Daisy.
