I recently moved into an apartment and was surprised when i hooked up the tv on the first day that i had 16 channels available. I don't have any sort of box and did not contact ntl to subscribe. I have no idea where the channels are coming from or how. But if i'm honest i was happy enough that i was receiving them. I had planned to subscribe to ntl but didn't bother as there's more than enough channels coming thru for my needs.

for the last few weeks i have been getting constant automated messages saying 'your scheduled technicians visit is on...' then a couple saying your reported fault is fixed and now more saying my appointment is on such a day.

Any idea whats going on? Obviously if it comes to it i will subscribe but have to say free tv is handy at the mo!

Is it a new development you've moved into?

No. Around a long time at this stage. Co-incidently i was talking to a work mate and it turns out she lived in the exact apartment a couple of years ago and she also had the free channels. Got another call after i first posted!!

Strange so u are getting calls about a tech coming over to the house? is that on the land line that was there already active when u moved in or are they to your mobile?

If you haven't called just ignore the calls, is been on boards before people moving to apartments and NTL analog been active without paying for subscriptions as it was convected by previous occupants but NTL/UPC didn't bother disconnecting when they moved out.

Its to my mobile. No idea how they got my number. Maybe from the agency? But i won't be to impressed if they gave my number out. Can you be connected to ntl without as box? I got a letter off them today address to tenant of my address outlining their offers. Which has me thinking they know i'm new. The place has been empty for a few months so its not that the last tenants have just cancelled. The more i think of it i think the agency have them my number. If thats the case i'm not happy

Yes you can watch TV without a decoder it will be analog signal, I think about 10 channels but you should need a subscription to get them

Other option is with a digital decoder from UPC.

I have 16 stations inc setanta sports. Guess i'll just have to keep pressing the cancel tech visit option and hope it stops eventually. Just annoying getting the calls every few days, sometimes more than one a day.

Be careful - although you did not ask for NTL to be connected, they are within their rights to disconnect your signal if you do not sign up.

In otherwards, to legitimately continue watching NTL, you should really contact them and subscribe.

If connected they can bill you. Or get a prosecution for "theft of service". You aren't immune because you didn't sign up.

How can they bill him if he didn't ask for the service. He can always keep quiet and say that he doesn't watch it, or doesn't even know there is NTL signal in the cable.

It would be very hard for them to prove he has used their service other than coming into his flat (either with his permission or with a court order) and finding his TV on.
