How many pairs of runners do you own

I've just ordered two pairs of my current fav (and now obsolete) Mizuno Wave Inspire 4's off t'interweb (€105 all in, can't go wrong). Add that to a pair of fell shoes already on their way to me that's going to move my runner total from 2 pairs 12 months ago to 7 pairs now

I'm sure there's tablets or therepy one can seek for shoe addiction. So how many is too much and just what to do with the old ones (which might be in decent nik, just not for running = + 500 miles) ? I don't use the gym and I'm not a runners around town kinda-guy.

    How many pairs of runners?
    or
How many pairs of active runners?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 638 ✭✭✭Rusty Cogs 08

    active 4
2 x MWF4's to alternate for general training
    1 x Fell for IMRA
    1 x racing shoe for 5m/5k races

    inactive 3
1 x old Kayano (ran last marathon in)
1 x new Kayano (a size too big and sit sparkling and unused)
    1 x MWF4's for future running

I suppose my point is, if you should stop training in a pair of runners after 500 miles that would last some of us about three months. Are we creating a shoe mountain ready to tip Ireland off the edge of the continental shelf ?

(Ultraman, millets sports for the Mizuno's)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭hunnymonster

I wash mine and put them with the charity clothes collection after I'm finished with them. My HM says I have to stop this though as he saw something on tv saying the clothes collections were a scam.

    I currently have
    2xgeneral training and long races
1x tri shoes (in case I ever do a short triathlon)
1x trail pair, very slim fitting so I've never really gotten on with them
1x retired pair that I use in the gym and non-running activities

I have a pair of Asics 2130s on the go and 2 pairs of obsolete ones that I'm just gonna dump.
Was thinking about buying New Balance 1062 for €65 - anyone have any experience with these babies?

    active

    1 x Nimbus 10

    inactive

    1 x Nimbus 9
    1 x kayano 13

Generally I only have 1 pair on the go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,415 ✭✭✭Racing Flat

Having 2 pairs on the go simultaneously is supposed to make them last 3 times as long as one pair:confused: i.e 1 pair used every day = 500miles. 2 pairs used every second day will last for a total of 1500miles (rather than 1000). Because they get to dry out between runs, the EVA (springy bit I think) lasts longer. Not sure if this is fact or fiction...

    Active
1*Asics 2130 for anything longer than an hour
1*Addidas Supernova 7 for anything shorter than an hour

    Inactive
1*Asics Kayano 13 for walking the dog

    Retired
1*Asics 2120 which I used for my first Marathon

Used to be a one shoe type but I now see the benefit of having 2. Far fewer knee injuries, feet problems and odour problems. I also love the Supernovas but they give out when my foot expands after an hour or so. Not suitable for long runs for me. I plan to experiment with my next 2 buys.

    Active:
1 pair of Asics Kayano 13
1 pair of Asics Kinsei 2
1 pair of La Sportiva Mountain Runners

    Casual:
3 pairs of Asics Kayano 13 (a little bit worn at this stage, sole is flat)

    Unused!: (Arnotts sale)
1 pair of Asics Kayano 14

I'd like to try a pair of racing flats at some point. I need all the help I can get if I want to crack the 20 minute 5K.

That's 7. I thought this would be excessive, but it merely seems to be the average here :D

2 x Kayanos used alternatively for easy and long runs
1 x Brooks standard for speed work and road races
    1 x XC spike
    1 x Track spike

Why do people have so many "retired" shoes? I understand keeping the last pair for the gym or walking etc, but 7 pairs tunney?! Mine are pretty much binned the minute I'm finished with them - can't imagine where I'd keep any more runners.

3 pairs - New Balance 764s that are as dead as a dodo (I'll miss them... I have to say I really loved these, but they're impossible to get now), Brooks Dyad 4's that I never really got on with (I'm not a neutral runner, and they feel like clown shoes), and the Kayano 14's that I run in at the moment.

Wouldn't mind another pair to rotate with the Kayanos.

2 x Asics Nimbus 9 [one for mucky fields]
    1 x Asics Nimbus 7 [gym]
1 X Nike spikes [xc and track races .. sady unused in ages]
    1 X Asics racing flats

    Inactive
2 x Nimbus detined for charity soon
    1 x spikes

    So about average...

    Active:
2 x Asics Kinsei I (one pair close to retirement, the other new, for long runs)
1 x Asics Kinsei II (These are too heavy, so only for short runs)
    1 x Innov8 FlyRoc 310s for Trail/Hill runs and IMRA.

    Retired:
    1 x Asics Kinsei I

Need to find an alternative to Asics Kinsei, as I don't like the IIs and can't get the Kinsei I anymore. I'm a neutral runner.

    Active
    Brooks adrenaline GTS8
    xc spikes
Lunar racers (which I'm now a big fan of, despite the ankle trouble at the start)

    Retired
Another pair of Brooks adrenaline that reached there max milage but I wear them to indoor football.
Kayanos that I never liked but still got 300 miles out of them
I have a mizuno for my everyday walking and they probably stink the most

Another pair of Brooks adrenaline, yet to be delivered from wiggle

I am only running a year but i have had :
1 x Nike Triax - will not buy again
1x Nike Shox - not bad

at the moment i am using :
Nike equalon - starting to feel the suppoprt weakening.,will not buy again
asics nimbus - good bit of life left in these

I have Mizuno Wave Inspire 5 ordered.
Also...i am only 10 minutes away from ordering the kayano 14's.
I have been looking for them for a while...my size is just back in on www.startfitness.co.uk

I find the nike lose there life much quicker than the asics, read good reports on the mizuno so decided to give them a go.

I'm no expert,i dont mind spending a few extra quid on shoes...you only have one pair of feet ....
As soon as i feel them go ....i get new ones

All in all since i took up running in nov 07,i have had only 4 pairs...
add two more this week to keep me going for another good few months.

    4 pairs

    In use -

    1 x Kayano 14s (use for running)

1 x Kinsei 2 (Bought in Arnotts sale last summer but don't get enough arch support from them so just use for xtraining)

1 x Cheap asics (don't know model) use the odd time for walks etc

    Dead -

1 x Kayano 13s - best shoes I've ever had and the 14s just aren't as good IMO - Does anyone know where I can get another pair in Ireland or UK ????? (size 9)

1 * active - Asics Nimbus, took a little while to break in

2 * retired - Nike Air Pegasus, fab runners, used for DM 08 training and D-Day
    - Asics GT-2120, didnt agree with me at all, caused back pain.
    Now my gym runners

1 active pair of Kayanos. I have ordered another pair of Kayano's from here this week. Great value I think.
After reading comments on here and talking to other runners I have decided to move to rotating between 2 active pairs. At £78 with a free pair of 1000 mile socks I was very easily persuaded.

I have 1 retired pair of Kayano's that I use for walking the prom, etc.

1 pair of Kayano's & a pair of adidas that I use when working around the house, garden, etc.

4 + 1 on the way. Not too bad. :D

Ah, my Mizuno Harrier 2's have just arrived. Don't see them staying that colour for long (wasp yellow).

    pgibbo,
How much is shiping to ireland ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭pgibbo

Shipping is £6 per order. One of the guys I work with got 2 pairs of Kayanos and the 2 pairs of 1000 mile socks delivered for a total of E170. Pretty good value. Unfortunately nowhere in Galway had any half price sales like Arnotts had. Kayanos, etc tend not to be included in a lot of the sales in the shops in Galway. :(

Need to get a new pair soon, I'll be going for some more 1062's. Where did you see them for €65?

Ditto - tried the New Balance after a visit to AmphibianKing. I found they wore really quickly with no substanbce in the base and I barely got 300 miles out of the pair.

Back on Mizuno Wave now again.

2 pairs active that are rotated: both Adidas Supernova Cushions (6 / 7 respectively)

LOTS of semi-retired ones, have a pair of Asics Gel Kinsei's in Denmark (so I don't need to bring a pair with me when I go home to the family there), Kayanos and many others. I really should throw some out...

And I do fancy a few extra pairs for intervals etc. in the spring...any excuse!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭Slogger Jogger

I've more runners than sense, assembled over a good long period of time I might add. Spread between shelving in the utility and the garden shed :)

I use them casually too, as I don't care much for shoes. Thats one of my excuses.

If 7 is average, then I'm obese, but I'm overdue a clear out obviously :)

    Active:

    Road:
4 pairs of asics 2130s (3 in use and 1 new pair still in box)
2 pairs of 2120s - coming to end of life.

    Mixed use:
1 pair of Salomon speed cross IIs
1 pair of asics trabucco - probably need to be ditched soon.

    Mucky stuff:
1 pair of inov-8 Mudclaw (new unused yet)
1 pair of inov-8 roclite 315 (I think they are orange under the dried muck)
1 pair of Helly Hansons (no clue what type - to mucky to read)

Casual use only / or not used in anger yet in the s*** stuff :
1 pair of Saloman XCR 3ds
    1 pair of adidas swoop
    1 pair of inov-8 roclite 318

    Inactive:
    Road / Various use:

1 pair of asics 2110s - should be thrown out at this stage.
    1 pair of Kayanos
    1 pair of Walshes

For those who know what they're after

    http://www.ransacker.co.uk/

is a price comparison search engine for buying running shoes from UK sites. Some stores don't deliver to Eire but most do.

we really should look at organising how to get old trainers donated to a good cause. I know Nike take them and make running tracks in some countries.

Well I was thinking more along the strand, there's a bicycle lane and two footpaths. Most runners use the grass but it's dark and damp this time of year. A lit running path would be fantastic (it would certainly get used).

Finally accepted that doing IM training in racers was a bad idea hence the heavy shoes purchased! Also turns out that when fatigued (i.e. after the guts of two hours running) that I over-pronate every so slightly on the right foot. Hence the Elites.
