Another Room Comeback

I am a week away from booking a holiday with 11 of my friends, I have been looking at two places, one is a 3 star and one is a 2 star, very similar prices.
The reason I haven't jumped on the 3 star is that it has some bad reviews, some people just seem to get bad rooms,

My question is if you get a substandard room is there anyway to get another one, or get your money back

Depends - sometimes you can request rooms, for instance I heard about a hotel that had a noisy street outside and a quiet street facing certain rooms. You can then ask for rooms facing the quiet street when you book.

Also you can tell them about the reviews and that you don't want to stay in a "bad room" (whatever that means here).

I haven't a clue about the legality of substandard rooms, maybe another poster has insight there.

Yes, just complain to the manager that the room isn't up to standard.

Unfortunately not enough Irish/British people do this but it's what needs to be done. If you have a complaint then complain. There are so many replies from hotel managers on Tripadvisor to bad room reviews along the lines of "Well we couldn't do anything about it because the client never brought the problems to our attention" :)

In some hotels not every room will be perfect so don't feel afraid to ask to be changed for whatever reason.

And the request was always accommodated when we found the room unsuitable. A lot of the time we got an upgraded room!! So there is definitely no harm in complaining that the room is not suitable!

I must be lucky in that I never felt that I was given a substandard room in relation to the price I was paying (I have got a few poorish-quality rooms but, as they were cheap, I felt it was fair enough).

It would be quite reasonable to object if you good a bad room for the price, and to ask the hotelier to do something about it. Bear in mind that if you are there at a busy time of year, there might not be an alternative room available. Your chances of a change are better if you book in early in the day, before all the other rooms have been occupied.

I wasn't quite clear what I meant by sub standard, as in flooded rooms and ants, but most are great reviews.

If there is no other options do you have any footing to get a refund.

Thanks for all the replies very helpful :D

I'd imagine it could depend on a million things most importantly what country you're visiting.

I'd say that the answer would be 'no' in most cases though if the hotel has offer to move or upgrade you.
