Separate Athletics and Marathon Forums

Currently there are separate Athletics and Marathon Forums. There has been discussion about what is the best way to proceed as there is huge crossover and dilution of discussion. The background is that there is much discussion on say cross-country or road races on both fora. Same with shoe recommendatiosn etc etc. Regular posters on both are getting frustrated (especially Racing Flat!!) and would like a combined all singing, all dancing running/athletics forum.

What do people on the Athletics forum think. How would you feel about a combined Running/Athletics forum or a separate Track and Field forum. Should it be kept as is?

In my opinion its all running and we should all be living as a big happy family and a running/athletics forum would be much better.

    What do y'all think?

One forum for athletics/marathon is enough IMO
Triathlon should remain in a seperate forum

    Bring them all in together.
Triathlon doesn't have enough volume to justify its own forum - well not for now anyway.
I propose Running/Athletics/Triathlon as the new title of merged fora.

That might make sense from a volume point of view, but some of the Tri people have said on the other thread that they think Tri should be separate...

Certainly the current format is one of the greatest perplexities in my life right now. I think it's like having 2 fora, one for '5-a-side soccer' and one for '11-a-side soccer and Rugby'.

I approve of that naming, simple and to the point.

I know that tri would like their own forum but although I don't have any interest in doing a tri myself, I'd sink doing swimming, they should be cautious about casting themselves off as a separate entity before they have enough traffic. Being part of a busier forum is more likely to gain the interest of passing people as well though, so until the number of tri threads on any of the possible combinations of forum become too much of an annoyance I'd think there isn't enough traffic just yet.

But I'm not doing a tri so what do I know?

happened for hisotrical reasons. there were debates about having a marathon/road running/lard-arse running forum at the same time as a triathlon forum (and coincidently swimming) and they just got lumped together.

My preference is to put athletics/marathon/tri together but I'll still check individual fora no matter what happens so it's not something I'll lose any sleep over.

I think it's about the best suggestion yet and will keep the greatest proportion of people happy. Should it be called ".../Triathlon" or ".../Multisport"? Not that I ever intend dipping my toes into it!

Why not just have a Running forum? I don´t see the point of someone doing a triatlon or some other field sport having to filter through the running information (realistically, in the two forums that we currently have the majority of the posts are about running) when they are completely different topics. Not fair on them TBH

I agree with tingle's high level goal, that marathon should be merged to athletics but i suggest that some sub-tab options should also be considered before this happens, to reflect sub-areas as highlighted by chimbhigh.

1: Marathon should merged/moved up Athletics. (maybe create sub-forums for specific athletic events).
2: Triathlon should remain in a seperate forum. It would be possible to have sub-forums for swim, bike, run under this.
3: There are already too many forums under Sports. Move the current forum of "Parkour & Free Running" to a sub-forum under Athletics, if it is still active.

I'd like to see this style of structure under the Athletics forum

    Athletics
    - Marathon
    - Track & Field
    - Parkour
    - Cross Country
    Triathlon
    - Swim
    - Bike
    - Run
    - IronMan/Ultra

I quite like the idea of keeping as much under one heading as possible. A series of sub-fora mean less cross-contamination. For example I never would have signed up for the Art O'Neill challenge tomorrow night had it been posted under mountain running in the first instance.

One possibilty to consider is a set of labels like they use in biz > consumer > bargain alerts. The labels identify roughly the area of interest?
