Hi, i have a question with regards to insurance. My partner has insurance on his car (needless to say). He has his full license for over 2 years and i've just obtained my learners permit. Does he need to add me to his insurance if he wants to give me a few lessons:confused:

What is the procedure here as it is very hard to get insurance with a learners permit and i would like to wait til i have my full license and my own. I know what i'm suggesting is probably illegal but i'm just not sure at all...

If you drive the car on public roads or in a public car park then what you are doing is illegal, yes.

You can learn the mechanics of a car in a driveway, but really if you want to learn and you want your partner to give you a few lessons then you need to get down as a named driver on his policy, apply for your test and get ready to pass your test when it comes around.

Another alternative would be to get lessons with a driving school or an instructor, they have insurance on their vehicles for people with a learner permit - part of the reason you pay them.

It's not hard to get insurance with a learner's permit, if it was we wouldn't have so many learner drivers in this country. I got my own car when I was 19 and got insured with a provisional license/learner's permit

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Your partner might be pleasantly surprised to find that his premium will actually go down if he adds you to his policy. Not sure if you have to be married for this though!

As with TouchingVirus I never had a problem getting insurance back with the provisional licence and I would agree that lessons would be no harm once you have the basics down.

Fat chance! they said it would cost 500euro til july. I may as well just put that money towards lessons and get covered when i have my full license. :(

That's unusual. Insurance companies are usually quite good with the addition of a partner to a policy.

I added my partner (learner) mid-term for a smalll amount and the renewal quote was less with my partner included than the quote for myself only.

Sounds mad. When I was learning, my girlfriend put me on her insurance. Think it cost an extra €60.

Really have to ask the question, what age is he and what's he driving?

Really have to ask the question, what age is he and what's he driving?

He's 30 and is driving a toyota 00 corolla. I'm getting driving lessons at the moment and they are going really well. Really need to practice though so probably gonna have to pay that 500 quid. Do you think they'd lower it if i show proof that i've had 5 lessons...
