Advice on New Racer

So I've been riding and old steel Colnago now for a while and it's not really doing the job anymore. The front brake makes the forks shudder, the rear derailleur slips when I get out of the saddle and the saddle itself is a disaster for sensitive bums! So I thought, nows the time to demote this bike to a hack bike for journeys to work and finally get the credit card out.

So I went up to the Cycle Superstore the other day and had a look. After perusing through all the bikes I could never afford that weigh about as much as my mobile phone my eye settled upon a Giant SCR 1.5 with a Shimano Tiagra groupset. It said it was reduced from 1000 euro to 850. Does this seem like a good deal? My budget in general would be the 1000 euro mark.

... As much as I'd like to help the irish economy ....

Buy it online for 500 quid:

Or ask CCS to match the wiggle price.

oh -- a colnago frame steel - any chance its 54cm -- :-).. 150 EUROS sounds like it would help your cause.

If the frame is still in good nick, you may do better upgrading the groupset and wheels. Depending on the frame, an older Colnago may be a much better frame than an entry level Giant.

Jaysus, thanks Caroline! I hadn't realised there's that much savings to be had between the euro and the pound. I foresee I trip north of the border on the cards so.

The Colnago frame isn't in great nick, it's rusting in quite a few places. I hadn't really planned on upgrading my current bike. My idea was to have two, one for locking in college and not worrying about, and one for spins. So I don't have plans to sell it.

You wouldn't recommend an entry level Giant at all then Tonto? Or are all entry levels not that great?

No, not saying that at all. It's just that there aren't many people who'd be lucky enough to have a Colnago as their commuter and it could well be a nicer ride. Having said that, if the frame is in bad nick, then you may have the right idea in wanting to keep it as your beater.

I would say that your often better trying to get a better bike with better components if possible. For 1000 EURO you can get alot of bike.

Oh yes, I would just get rid of your old frame... to me ;)

Just slightly over your budget @ €1,075 but amazing value for the price and gets great reviews...

Slane's in Belfast have a good showroom and are as competitive as online retailers. You could nip up there and have a look before you buy as well. They stock Cervelo's, Colnago's, Biachi's and Pinarello's.
They also have a new Colnago for £899 (tiagra)

Or the same bike with 105 for £1100
