Custom name tags and avatars for non-subscribers?

Hi there, I've noticed that there are a few posters who are not signed up as subscribers (aka, name isn't italicized) yet still have their own custom avatar and name tag underneath their username. Can someone clear up for me how they get them in the first place? Is it like a special reward for certain posters or something?…

If you are a subscriber you can set your profile to not show as a subscriber hence you won't see the coloured stars but you'll see the avatar and italicisation afaiu.
