Record crowds for the Scottish teams which were always the worry with this league. Munster and Leinster having consistently higher crowds. Its looking good for this league.

Ulster V Munster must have been a record attendance for a League match. In fairness Munster, Leinster and Ulster have had great crowds all year as have the Ospreys and Scarlets and the Dragons over the Xmas weeks. Things are looking good for the old ML.
Actually there are 7 teams in contention to win it at the half way point!

Lansdowne road 2 years back for Leinster v Ulster is the record. When the new L. road is finished you can be sure that any Leinster v Munster games will beat that record.

The record is 48,000 for Leinster-Ulster (with the second largest attendance being the 32,000 or so for Leinster-Munster).

That'll probably only be broken when they introduce finals. With the right marketing it would definitely be possible to fill up the Millenium Stadium. Maybe not for another few years though as the Welsh don't exactly give their full support to the league.

The crowd figures in the league have swelled over the last few years. The Irish sides were always the best supported sides, but we've really started to see the tip of the "big time" ice berg.

Since its introduction 5 years ago, the "Best Supported Team" award has gone to an Irish team each year:
    2007/08 Leinster 14,361
    2006/07 Leinster 11,892
    2005/06 Ulster 9,182
    2004/05 Ulster 6,693
    2003/04 Ulster 6,850

Munster will continue that trend this season, with probably Leinster & Ulster in 2nd & 3rd.

Looking at 5 years ago, Ulster were the best supported team in the league with an average gate of 6,850. It goes to show now how far the league has come with the average gates of Irish teams this year so far:

    Leinster 16,014
Munster 16,000 (Having played 2 games in Musgrave)
    Ulster 9,345
    Connacht 2,353

The Ulster and Connach figures may be a bit misleading also as they both had very slow starts on attendence this season, particularly Connacht with only 829 people braving the cold for their match against the Ospreys, but it makes it even more impressive their figure is up so much including that!!

It's great to see and long may it continue. The league is certainly into it's second chapter now and is getting better and better each year both on the field and off it! I think Play-offs will help build the reputation and competition ever more also. I was against them also and I know a lot of people here don't like them, but you have to admit it does add a lot to the spectacle and drama of the competition a la GP and gives a grande finale finish which can only be a good thing.

With the great new facilities being brought in also, the league is being played in much better surroundings by almost every team. In fact I think Connacht, Glasgow & Edinburgh are the only teams who haven't been able to invest in ground development, but Glasgow made a good move to firhill which suits them well.

Actually the Scarlets' attendance at their new stadium (capacity c. 15,000) has been very disappointing. The average so far has been 7,700, with a predicted 9,200 required to remain solvent.

And I'm still really worried about Scottish rugby. The recent growth in crowds is only because of free tickets being given out by the Scottish Union to those who went to the Autumn Internationals.

It's good to see that Irish rugby is thriving though. Let's hope it continues to grow and that the success of the provinces accommodates that growth.

Surely solvency isn't a problem at the moment for them? They sold the land their old ground was on for millions.
