    Hi just a quick question.

I'm a pretty lean bloke with a very fast metabolisim who works out a little (3/4 days just weights for 45mins to 1 hour) during the week at home in the morning doing some basic weights for chest and arms. I'm just over 5 f'11 and weigh normally between 11.5 and 12 stone which is quiet normal i think. I've got quite good muscle definition but im having problems bulking up and would like to maybe move up to 12.5 stone. I've been told some protein shakes work and help like createen i think thats how its called/spelt. Can anyone advice my on what to buy? just to clarify im not looking to body build just to bulk up a little bit and only want to buy stuff sold legally of shelves. Any help greatly appriciated?:)

Read the stickies and use the search function. Loads of threads with the same question. Shouldn't take long at all!

You better hope g'em doesn't see that line mate... ;) I think that's the crux of it though, there is no quick answer... it sounds quick: eat clean, work out hard, rest well but each of those three components takes a huge amount of time and effort to learn about and apply the knowledge.

Put aside a couple of hours and read through some of the (many) bulking threads on the forum as well as a lot of the nutritional stuff from g'em et al. There's an absolute wealth of knowledge in this forum, just invest the time to go looking for it.

I love them posts. Not looking to body build... just bulk up (there's that word again) and I'm looking for a quick answer.

Here's a quick answer, eat about 3000/4000 good calories a day and forget about working your arms. Squat like a bastad, bench like a bastad and DL like bastad and do plenty of chins.

    See you next week :)

Well we all know that everyone who bodybuilds is unsightly, and is ALWAYS ON STEROIDS. No way can someone attain a good body naturally! :p

Its all those protein shakes... the 'juice', they call it? :D

Hmmm..i get what your all saying i guess. I just thought there might be something (legal) i could drink before or after i start my weights to help me put on bit more bulk. I'm not big into looking like a meat head in anyway im actually quite lucky with what ive been given body wise most my mates think im a lucky bastard as i dont really work out and just do some weights say tues to sat in morning for about 45 mins at home in morning before work but then the week after i might do nothing just depends on how i feel that week. I've been told to up my weights just today after some advice from a personnal trainer. He reckons less reps with heavier weight will help. Right now im my heaviest weight is 15kg and i curl 3 sets of 30 no problem he reckons i just need to go to Argos and buy 20kg and do less reps and more sets say 5 x 8. I'll try that but as i said if anyone thinks createen works let me know my diet is only all right i could eat rubbish for a week then eat healthy the next. I've never put on weight in my life only from putting on muscle.

Right. You need to hit the stickies and basically bone up on FITNESS 101...

'Meat heads' as you describe them, don't exist. Thats b0llocks. They're often the guys most likely to help you out in the gym and they sure as hell know more than a skinny so-and-so who's "ripped", and who's trying to be a meathead while failing miserably. Have respect for everyone who puts in work, because to have that amount of meat, those guys sure as hell have.

    Simply accept a few things:

*You want to bulk up a bit... build yourself up... build your body... wait a second, that would make you a wannabe bodybuilder!

*This BS about there being something legal to drink to make you bigger... my friend, if looking good was to be obtained through drinking drinks, legal or illegal, we'd all look like Arnie, Frank Zane, or Jamie Eason (or whatever you like).
If you want to bulk up, you have to eat. Again, EAT.... EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT. And when you're done working out, eat eat eat even more.

*The personal trainer is thinking along the right path, but I'd say get at least 45kg more. To be doing 90 rep curls and expect to get bigger is daft.
To get big, you have to lift big. Squats, deadlifts, bench presses, rows, and shoulder presses will work you out like nothing else. Not poncey curls all day.

*'Createen' doesn't exist. In fitness, there is a supplement called creatine. You have no need for it.

*Your diet is the average guys 'some good some bad' diet. If you wanna bulk, change that. Simple as.

Above all, stop looking for an easy way - magical drinks, or creatine, or bazillions of curls will not make you bigger. Hard work and dedication will. So if you wanna get there, use whats between your ears and also prove you have something dangling between your legs to get through the hard work part! Good luck.

Read the title of your thread, then read Jimmy's post, then read again.

Don't be so fúcking ungrateful, he took the time to respond and give advice, advice that you needed to hear and it's 100% true if you want to bulk up.

Yes, I'm definitely 'on the roids' ;) Well done. Confirming my suspicions.

The reason I gave you an angry reply is because January has hit and you expect a magical drink to make you look great. When told to look at the stickies, you tell us you want a quick answer. You also use the label 'meathead's which shows nothing but disrespect and ignorance. and you continue to ask for a magical answer.

I, along with most on the forum, love helping people in any way we can. I've bulked in the past and am still doing it. But when I asked, I did it with some respect, and I learned how to use a search function.

Read the stickies, or else continue curling into nothingness. Simple as.

You're in the Fitness Forum - there's a lot of very dedicated people in here who work very hard and put in a lot of hours and get excellent results for it. Saying the above is like waving a red rag in front of a bull and then being surprised when it gets pissed at you.

If you only want to put on half a stone, drink an extra litre of milk each day, eat an extra meal, drop the curls and start doing compound lifts like squats, benching, rows, deadlifts, chin ups/ pull ups and lunges. It will only take you a few weeks to see results.

And honestly, drop the intonation that people who take fitness seriously are meatheads - the only one who comes off badly from those comments is you. Is it really surprising that some of the responses are a little on the negative side when you call posters those kind of names?

I apologise if i offended anyone as you can see i never post on here and i have a make shift gym at home. When i say meatheads i guess it does sound a little off, its not what i meant. Thanks for the advice. My only problem is i can't drink milk only with tea/cereal dont know why i cant drink on its own just never been able to since i was a kid and secondly i've been doing Pull ups for years and find i can lift my body weight no problem 3 x 20 reps i do every morning hands forwards then 3 x 20 hands backwards inside and out so im not really pushing myself anymore doing them. Do Push ups help with muscle mass or do they just tone you? again sorry for the basic questions i'll go looking properly when i have time in other forums.

Sorry and one last question and i'll leave you alone:). What excercise should i do to build the top part of my pecs/chest. My chest is very well formed and i happy with it. The lower part is fine but its the area below my collar bone (how do i put it the top half of my chest) is what to work on to increase the muscle there. If im making sense what is the best excercises to work on that are?..thks again and thats my last.

No worries, I find it highly amusing when someone calls me a meathead without knowing what I look like in RL :D
My only problem is i can't drink milk only with tea/cereal dont know why i cant drink on its own just never been able to since i was a kid
Do you like peanut butter? Tbh peanut butter and milk are simply two very easy ways to get extra calories into you as opposed to preparing complex meals. Alternatively just eat a few handfuls of some nuts of choice or add some calorie dense healthy foods like an extra burger patty or eat an extra sandwich each day. All the powders and supplements in the world will generally only come second place in effectiveness to goo dold fashioned food (for a variety of reasons tbh, including price, ease of consumption and obtainability).
and secondly i've been doing Pull ups for years and find i can lift my body weight no problem 3 x 20 reps i do every morning hands forwards then 3 x 20 hands backwards inside and out so im not really pushing myself anymore doing them.
Add weight. Tie a dumbell around your waist to do pull ups or do them one handed or with a towel around the bar to make hte grip harder.
Do Push ups help with muscle mass or do they just tone you? again sorry for
meh, not so good for increasing muscle mass, but again if you had weight plates you could lie them on your back which would certainly help.

It's the combination of excess calories (in moderation) and heavy compound lifts that stimulate a high volume of muscle fibres that form the winning combination for increasing size.

This 'roided up meathead recommends Nesquik to the guy with the (im his view) excellently formed chest.

One of my home gym disasters was to load up my expensive steel laptop case with 15Kgs of plates and balance it on my back. The whole thing came crashing down of course after two reps destroying the poor case.

hands forwards, i.e. palms away, are pullups, palms facing is chinups. 20 chinups is very good, 20 pullups is excellent! Add weight as g'em said, she mentioned 1 handed, this is gripping your bar hand by the wrist with your free hand. I am not too fond of them, another technique is to just use 1 or 2 fingers on one hand on the bar, so the other arm is forced to work harder. Weighted chins is my favourite though, you can get a dip belt when going high, but a bathrobe belt can be looped and tied through plates, or stick them in a backpack. Try some handstand pushups for your shoulders if you can manage any.

If you want to make stuff check out this site. http://www.angelfire.com/ny5/shenandoah/Grunt/grunt.html

I would highly recommend buying or making gymnastic rings, they can hang form your chinup bar.

Sorry, don't mean to jump in and give abuse, but seriously, after you made a point of insulting everybody on the forum, not only do you come back asking for more help, but you start taking the piss again! (apologies if that was intended to be ironic or something, just doesn't seem that way!)

    Come on!

As somebody who until recently had never set foot in a gym before, I gotta say i've never found the guys and gals on this forum anything but helpful, and always give great advice. Come on, show some respect.

Also, if your body is so great etc etc, why are you on looking for help? Thought you were blessed?

I borrowed some cousins over the christmas (3 year old and 8 year old) for weighted push ups, if anyone finds themselves babysitting it would be an interesting thing to try! ;)

Fabulous. I think we're done here.

But I think it's improtant that we finish up properly, and it's times like this that us Fitness folk like to get together and remind each other just what life is all about.

    Altogether now...
