Well from personal experience i do weights with very little cardio and i've gone from 71kg to 70kg, AND i take whey protein. How i'm losing weight i don't know, however i have noticeably put on more muscle.

But if you really want to lose weight then doing more cardio than weights is probably the way to go even if you don't enjoy it. I have heard however that once you start jogging you get addicted, sort of like you do with weights. So after a few weeks it probably wouldn't be that bad.

I probably didn't help that much, but good luck!

Stick with what you like best, and you are lucky since weights are great for FAT loss.

Lifting weights really helped me lose fat, but not necessarily "weight". I was 12stone for over a year, losing fat and gaining muscle at the same rate. Bear in mind that muscle only takes up 1/3 the volume as fat. Also the muscle goes on "in the right places". I am actively trying my best to build big muscle, lifting heavy weights

Say you lift 3 times a week, 60mins. Now say you burn 400kcal in those sessions. All during the week your body is trying to build new muscle, this means it uses calories!, even when sitting around the next day you are using calories to build muscle. AND you need more calories just to maintain this new muscle. You can sort of compare it to being pregnant, you need more caloires to "build" the new tissue- i.e. the baby. Then just to keep the bump/muscles warm and alive it takes more calories. Also muscle needs more calories to maintain it than fat. So a muscular 15stone man lying in bed needs more calories than a 15stone fat man.

Now you could have just ran 3 times a week for 60mins, burning maybe 500kcal in the hour. BUT on your days off you do not reap all the advantages that lifting will bring, on the calorie side. Also being stronger will help in your daily life.

As you get older you lose muscle if you are not active, your metabolism drops. If you are starting out at say 30, then you are just building up the muscle you once had in your teens.

I have put on more weight recently, but very little fat, I went from 12 to 12.75 stone but my jeans still fit the exact same way. So do not worry too much about weight, measure yourself, take photos etc. Get some tightish old jeans (well washed and preshrunk), these can act as a whole load of tape measures down your legs. Change is gradual and can go un-noticed, especially if your scale says nothing is happening.

Check out www.exrx.net and www.stronglifts.com for tips on doing weights correctly.

Ugh, join the club. But fair play to you.

I found out about Paul Hurley through his bridal bootcamp with Confetti.ie.

What makes his weight loss approach different is that it's not just about gym time and workouts, it's also about behavioural modification. He just published a book called Think and Be Slim that has been getting positive reviews.

    Good luck!

Hi, I was 15 1/2stone back in the end of September and I am just barely over 14 stone now thanks to a mixture of weights and cardio. I would say from my own personal experience that weights is essential to fat loss, makes you feel and look better by toning your body as opposed to just losing weight with strictly cardio work. Even at 14stone I have been told I shouldnt lose anymore, but I am aiming for 13!

On the cardio side I only did approx 5k a night and it felt good, have increased now to 8km 4/5 nights. I reckon it obviously would have to have accelerated the weight loss to some degree. However, I would stress the importance of diet and by cutting out sugar and all processed foods from your diet. Bring in porridge , nuts and unprocessed foods. Drink a healthy amount of water to cleanse the system. I also take a whey protein drink mixed with frozen fruits, low fat yogurt and a splash of milk after each workout. I find this is something I look forward to after my workout, a kinda of a treat to myself. Also, its beneficial in building muscle and keeping hunger at bay, it actually encourages weight loss.

On the cardio, in hindsight i would work on building muscle in all areas especially doing squats etc before doing much cardio, that's if you are intending to jog on roads or even on a threadmill, as when you are out of condition like that it puts awful strain on legs, knees, ankles etc. Start first with weights and exercises and then increase the cardio gradually over time when your muscles and body gets in better condition. Dumbbell lunges are an excellent fat loss exercise, i would highy recommend them. Thats just my own personell experience!

Muscle is heavier than fat - your weight might increase marginally. Increased cardio work and balanced diet key to weight loss. Weight training will help tone your body.
