    Hi

I want to have a full check-up done, purely for my own peace of mind, but can't really afford having to take days off and queue from 7am at St. James'.

Are there any other private clinics that people can recommend who do a full STI work-up? Cost isn't a problem

    thanks

Any good GP can do a full STI screen for you, by taking swabs and blood and sending them off for analysis. However, like James walk-in clinic this will appear on your permanent medical record and can come back to bite you in the ass. This is also true of private clinics, though i don't know of any private clinic that is specifically a GUM clinic.

I don't know if the following applies to you, but may be of help to others:

The gay mens health project run a clinic for gay men and men who sleep with men which is completely anonymous, free, fast and efficient. More details can be found on their website:

How do you mean it could come back to bite you on the ass?

There's s sticky in PI but i cannot recommend the well woman's centre over in D4 highly enough. It's €160 and for that you get the test and any treatment needed. (I'm a bloke- they do blokes there too) They post you out the results.

The doctor was very friendly and professional and having dealt with the STI clinic in college which frankly was terrible condecending treatment it was a place I would feel comfortable going again. (though fingers crossed not)

Try Everyman Clinic on Mount St. Cheaper than WellWoman (about 80 i think). Really nice doctor.

i suspect bunny is referring to following. if you ever apply for life assurance or PHI you would be asked if you were ever tested for a STI. If you answer yes they load the premium , if you answer No then make a claim they will check your med records (you have lied so they disallow the claim)

Unfortunately I had to visit the clinic in smithfield recently. It's in the Charter Medical building. STI screening is carried out in the first floor (just walk straight by the guy on the ground floor desk and get the lift) and costs Eur120. I went there in the evening and it was very quite, the guys on the front desk are very nice, and discrete when you say that you need an STI screen.
I filled in a short form, and was seen immediately.
A nurse takes your medical history, and takes blood for Hep A, B, HIV and Syphilis. The doctor on duty then talks to you, asking about any acute illness, examines the penis etc., and takes a urethral swap for Gonorrhea and then you provide a urine sample for Chlamydia. Do not go to the loo before you go to the clinic, your urine should be in the bladder for at least 1 hour prior to the sample being taken (better chance of an accurate diagnosis).
That's it really, all in all about as good as it can get for what it is.

I find this a little worrying! 'Where' exactly is my permanent medical record? Surely you mean they check with my GP? Has somebody been creating a KGB style file on me somewhere, sometime?

    Sur

I was tested twice before (normal every 10,000 miles sort of thing and was clean on both times thank goodness). I was tested in the public system for free and they told me when I asked that this will not be on my record and kept confidential. Surely isn't getting STI tested often a sign of good responsible sexual health which such lead to a lowering of premiums provided you remain STI free?? I would not feel happy having my private Medical records released to companies like this, Bill Clinton didn't have to release his for example.

How do you get it done for free? My local GP wants to charge me €120 but I know someone with a medical card whose GP is doing it for free although I know mine won't, medical card or not.

Which STD Testing Clinics are open late night, early morning or weekends?
i.e. before 8am in the morning, after 6pm evenings, or weekends?

http://stdclinics.ie is a good place to start. It lists specialists in the field with their details.

There are a number of Public GUM Clinics in Ireland where testing is available for free - in Dublin St. James' Guide Clinic is the most obvious.

I would recommend that you seriously think twice about testing through your GP. This, depending on the GP wil go on your permanent medical record and could be made available to health/Life insurance companies etc or for certain jobs.

Testing in GUM clinics (private or public) ensures your confidentiality from such matters.

To the person asking about Herpes tests - there are no herpes tests available in Ireland. If you present to a GUM Clinic with Herpes symptoms (blisters/sores etc..) they will perform a swab test on the infected area. Blood testing is available in England in some clinics - London has a few - "Herpes Select" test. Nowhere near 100% accurate in determing genital infection as you may have HSV 1 or 2 orally (the vast majority of the population has HSV1 (cold sore causing strain). Unless you have an outbreak there is no real need to worry.

Reading through the thread's in search of an answer to the best and cheapest sexually transmitted disease specialist clinic or private doctors,I came across a Dr Shay Keating.I dont know if he is gay himself-but if not , he has that vital quality of not judging in any manner. I saw him at the 'Gay Man's health Clinic in Haddington Road first, and due to anonymity I have attended him continuously for STI screenings. He has the facilities to give you your HIV results in 10 minutes, alongside analysis any swabs taken say for gonorrhoea , chlamydia, warts, herpes etc. The only STI that needed to return for a blood result was Syphilis. A good Dr to have as he works in the STI clinic in St James hospital and whilst he treats most STD's himself, he also has the facility to have you referred to a team of professionals within days. On top of all this, money dose not really raise its ugly head, and when its pay time, I think 80 Euro (A WELL SPENT FEW BUCKS) to know in ten minutes that you are HIV neg. With his link to James it seems good to point out the quicker you get the test the better after believing you may have come in contact with it. Reason being, if your results return HIV + ,it appears I believe that he can refer you to James and if you start prophylaxis treatment (which is the same treatment for HIV) within, I think 72 hours your chances of clearing the virus become almost for sure. The Gay man's health clinic on Tues and wed is free but only limited amount seen on any night. Privately I think 50 Euro for visit. full screen I think around 80. And You have anonymity, which was vital to me. he is at 254 Harold's Cross Road, Dublin 6W. His Tel <snip> Step:):)

Stephen you have this part wrong/muddled up I am afraid.

Once you test positive for HIV (true test) then you have HIV and nothing at present in this world can cure that I am afraid. There are no tests available which would show HIV accurately withing 72 hours.

Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is a course of anti-retrovirals that has shown to be effective (not 100% though) given to a patient within 72 hours of a high risk encounter or affirmative exposure to HIV. The course can be commenced from 1 hours to 72 hours after the exposure (the sooner the better) and can prevent seroconversion. The course of meds is 4 weeks in length.

HIV testing at an early stage can be preformed around 7 days after exposure. However, these tests while commonly used in the US and occassionaly in Ireland, do not carry official approval from CDC or the ECDC or the WHO for diagnostic purposes. The true purposes of such tests is actually for HIV management in patients and it monitors the amount of HIV in the body.

It is however a very good diagnostic test with an accuracy of approximately 90% but due to the fact that it is a long way off 100% and the high chances of false positive results it is not approved for diagnosis in the mainstream yet

THE OTHER DAY I PUT A FOLLOW UP THREAD APPOLOGISING FOR GIVING INCORRECT INFO. WHILST MY APOLOGY STILL HOLDS, I WAS TOLD THAT THE TEST KITS THAT ARE USED BY SOME DOCTORS WERE ONLY 90 PC ACCURATE. AFTER DOINGB SOME RESEARCH I HAVE BEEN INFORMED THE FDA DO IMPLEMENT THEIR USE AND THEY ARE IN EFFECT 99.9 % ACCURATE. apparently THE TIMING OF THE TEST IS OF MAJOR IMPORTANCE (AS WITH REGULAR BLOOD TESTS. READING A FOLLOW ON YHREAD WHERE SOMEONE SAID THAT DR FRIEDMAN WAS A FRIEND OF HIS. I WOULD LIKE TO SAY AT NO STAGE WAS I DOUBTING EITHER DOCTORS.
