Well is there many Meath men on these forums and even at that was there any at todays game? The final score-line might indicate a convincing win but in fairness the 1st half was a bit of a disaster for the royals. The 2nd half was a wee bit better for the royals but not to take from the win Westmeath were dire in the 2nd half and much more experimental than the royals and in fairness Westmeath had 3 maybe 4 at most of thier 1st team players whereas meath had maybe 8.

Personally i thought Eoin Reilly had a fantastic game for meath and id love to see him mature a wee bit more and see alot more of him in the green and gold this coming year. I felt another good addition to this years team was that of David Bray. He was fantastic in this years club championship and hopefully he'll do well with the county team this year also.

    Any thoughts guys????

After the last few years, we'll take any win we can, Westmeath usually oblige but I think they are a better team than us at the moment.

Good to see the forwards put up a reasonable score, breeds confidence.

Agreed but there was a good few missed goal chance's by the royals. Big Joe's penalty springs to mind and Queeney (i think) missed a good opportunity also.

    Ridiculous,

I can understand how fans would analyse a result like this and get optimistic very quickly.I drove down to Tullamore to watch Dublin play Offaly with Mullet and while the players (who had very little experience playing and training together) beat Offaly,we were fully aware that only one or two of these players may get a look in,if they are lucky,at the business end of the year.

I am not too sure of Meaths lineup but you can bet your last euro that Westmeath were probably missing some prominent well estabslished stars like Duffy,Dolan,Flanagan,Connaughton etc.

We bet Westmeath by 10 points in last years O byrne Cup.3 weeks later we scraped by them in the National League by 2 points.Meath won't see a score like that again against Westmeath if they are lucky to get past the Dubs first.Thats for sure.

However,it is time to get rid of the likes of Sheridan and Harrington and start concentrating on new players.Thats what the O Byrne Cup does.Meath v Kildare will be a tougher challenge as McGeeney will probably put out a mix of youth and experience.

I have to agree with BlackBelt, How Sheridan is still playing for Meath I just dont know, he is just woeful at best!

We really need to get our act together because it simply hasn't been good enough over the past few years.

Agree with ya about Sheridan, He seemed very akward on him and looked as if he had a few too many christmas dinners over the holidays. The midfield seemed to be playing alot of high long balls into him. In fairness he caught most of them but then made a balls of the play after that. If the man marking him had of been anyway decent at marking him he'd have been in a hell of alot more trouble.

That is what I always thought of Sheridan. He is a bit lazy.Always waits for the ball to come to him and only plays well against the smaller teams.I think you need a few more Clann Na Gael players in the panel.Seneschalstown players aren't the answer for Meath.

Peadar Byrne is also a player who I think is well overrated. You need Stephen Bray and players with that sort of determination to have a better chance of getting further.Even at club level you can see that a lot of play goes through him and a lot of scores are made and got by him.

Cormac McGill,an exiled relation of a certain Dublin poster here, has looked promising in the games he has played.

Totally agree with ya BB. Bray was brilliant yesterday, he's a real grafter, no matter where ya looked on the pitch yesterday there he was making gaps for him to use or excuting inch perfect passes. He is an amazing player. There was no sign of McGill yesterday. He's from my area and have been watching him closely this year at club level as would love to see more Ashbourne men on the senior team. He didnt play overly well at club level in the past few months. Im told that he has gotten a call up for this years panel. I would love to see him with more time to improve in the green and gold he did play well last year and would love to see him mature his game well this coming year.

He looked very good last year alright. Still young also so plenty of time to improve more. Id say he will be a quality player in time.....just for the wrong county :D

Dermot Bannon, Doran Harte and Francis Boyle were the only Westmeath players who were on the team in last years championship. Westmeath will be a different team come championship though they need Flanagan and Duffy(both injured) fit at midfield, and another few forwards to take the workload off Dessie/Denis Glennon. Meath we will have to wait and see what happens when they play Dublin, but they have lots of good forwards including the 2 Brays, so they have potential to go well in the championship too.
