I think I have the same problem on my Focus 1.4 2001.

Stuttering/hesitation at the lower revs when hitting the accelerator often needing to down gear to get the power I need.

Is this the same as you are experiencing?

I have already replaced the spark plugs as I had a similar problem a few years ago and this rectified it. No joy although initially it seemed better. Checked spark plug leads and resistance seems ok cross all. Strangely, maybe, I am also getting a disintegration on radio sound when this hesitation happens.

Faced with option of getting the coil pack myself and potentially it not being the problem. Could it be fuel or air related? Dont want to get into chasing a problem and spending a fortune.

Local ford garage in Dublin is quoting €45 for a diagnosis and a further €167 for the coil pack and labour to replace. €212 total.

Was thinking of just going with the diagnosis anyway but it was indicated that the garage usally do the diagnosis/fix in one go.

If this ebay site has legit parts then it makes sense to fork out the £25 + £10 p&p first to see if it fixes it?

    Appreciate the feedback.

EXACT same with my Focus...needed new plug, lead and distributor. Apparently lots of people brining them in with same problem.

Squirrel6767 I had exactly the same problem as you with my 00 Focus 1.6 last month. Lack of power and very poor responce from car. rang local garage and he said sounded like the coil pack was gone, he also said it was a common fault on Focus cars of that age. Brought it up to him next day and was fixed within an hour and cost E100 which I think was not too bad. Have the car 6 years now and has been running perfectly up to that with 135,000 miles now on the clock. Had considered changing recently but will drive it until she dies as car worth 1-2 thousand now. best car I ever owned.

Yeah that is a common problem, done one today.

I might be doing this myself soon. Car running rough on idle (mk1foci), it sounds like shes misfiring. I'm changing the plugs tomorrow and hopefully there will be an improvement.

Look down to where the spark plugs are, sometimes that fills up with water/coolant and causes miss firing.

I removed the leads yesterday and they seemed ok, no rust, water, or corrosion marks (white flakey powder) at the leads or plugs. I didn't check distributor end though. If I had a multimeter I could check the voltage going through them. :(

With 40000 volts going through a multimeter won't work. When you take out the plugs have a look for track marks going down the side.

Can the cat be damaged by continuing to drive on a failing coil pack?

Can the cat be damaged by continuing to drive on a failing coil pack?

YES, most likely, and will cost a lot more than a cat. Did a coil pack on a 02 Focus recently - about a month later the car was back for a cat.

In a very extreme case the cat could get hot enough for the car to go on fire. Have seen it happen on other cars but not on a Focus.

Christ, I have done a fair few miles since the issue started. Hope I havent knackered the cat.

I have ordered one of the coil packs from the ebay site Plug suggested above. Bones of €40 when you include postage and conversion from GBP.

Sounds a bit suss though. Got a mail to give them a call. They hadnt received a batch of stickers by yesterday. Stickers for what? Well, seemingly the coils come from the same plant as those that are manufactured for Ford but they dont have the Motorcraft stickers. The guys on the ebay Ford shop put the stickers on after. Hmmmm !!

Anyway, if it works and I save the bones of €150 by not sending it to the Ford garage I wont be complaining.

Will keep the post up to speed when I recieve the part.

as its a popular coil the Chinese make lots of these, some can last months, some only days.
Visteon is the name that should be on the coil if its a genuine one with a little hologram, Motorcraft is just an aftermarket brand Ford use and anyway not all the stuff in Motorcraft boxes is of the same quality as would have come on the car originally.

Received the coil in the post today. Swapped it in and running perfectly now. (I needed to get a T25 star screwdriver to get it off).
You know straight away that its running as you fondly remembered!

I still dont know whether the coil pack is authentic or not but the guys I got it from (see previous ebay link) sound genuine when you talk to them and they say it is the real thing. It doesnt have the Visteon sticker.

Either way I am up and running and saved myself a few quid.

So, if you do have the stuttering/hesitation with your Focus then sequence would be to replace the spark plugs first and see if it fixes it. If not then its likely that it is the coil pack.

Anyone know how much the part only is from a dealer or factors?

Hello, I'm new to the boards. :P
I have an 01 Focus 1.6. It is doing the jumping thing. I took it to my local garage and he said it was my electronic ignition. Is this the same as the ignition coil pack you mentioned?
He changed the plugs this made no difference.

Ignition coil, T piece pipe, idle speed control valve. All depends really...

    Thank you for replying.:)
I managed to get it sorted. I had a new ignition coil fitted. I had a long drive today and it was fine. Not one jump and seemed to have so much more power.;)
The part did cost me €89 (I'm in Ireland) which I thouight was expensive. I'm not sure how much the garage are going to charge???:(
