I just got a bill for 180 from o2 on our mobile broadband package. Can this be right? I've just been shafted.

You've went over the limit I guess, have you been monitoring usage?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

You must have went over your limit, O2 have been charging customers for a while now for that carry on. I watch my limit religiously :D

Ring O2 customer care on 1909 and they will explain the charges to you. As the others said you probabnly went over your limit ... so you're being charged as per T&C.

O2 do have another package which is €79 ex VAT per month which I guess you could sign up to if you're a heavy user ... you're probably better off with 2 modems and monitoring your usage though.

    How do you do that?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,080 ✭✭✭✭Random

You can monitor your usage with the inbuilt software, O2 website (which is up to about 24hrs behind), and some common sense.

And it's 6c per MB ...so 1GB will set you back roughly €60, sounds like you went over by about 3gigs ;)

    I feel ill.

I'll try to terminate the contract if I can and switch to Irish broadband, at least it's consistent.

o2 has a very patchy service, often we couldn't get any coverage.

I didn't stream or download that much at all. Can this be from regular net useage?

Regular net usage for one person might not be regular net usage for another person but going over 10gbit is not very hard at all.

If you're going to try terminate the contract you will have to prove that you're not getting what you pay for and don't mention the big bill or it will seem like you are packing it in for going over the limit.

Hey, how do you check your usage online. I tried registering with the mobile number and pin that came with the 3G sim that I put into the modem but that didnt work... it wouldnt let me register.

I see in the software you've to manually reset the counter each month, there isnt a better way to monitor the usage is there?

I'm on the train now, on the internet and I havent even noticed any patches of bad signal, great stuff.

look on the bright side, before i got my phone on at home i was using my mobile for mobile internet (this was about 3 years ago). my bill was almost 600€ for a month of very conservative surfing and mail checking with images turned off and attachment downloads disabled in my email. :)

i'd called them before hand and asked about data packages and was told that there was no option except the one i was on (which was wrong) so i tried my best to not use it too much, but they charged me €7.50 per MB (no, that's mb not gb!).

i called back and complained and was asked why i didn't choose one of their cheaper data plans as it would have only cost me less than 60€ on their best plan. you can imagine what i said to them then. :D

after i calmed down and they got a manager, they had a log of the call and someone got their legs slapped and they refunded the whole amount, which was handy cos I'd already got a platinum upgrade off the back of the giant bill and got a nice new phone out of it for next to nothing. ;)

they can claim that you have had good use of the service considering that you have gone over the 10GB cap by about 3GB so your best bet is to stop downloading movies as these eat up your allowance as does online poker!

i am an average user but have to spend day and night online to use up 7-8GB of my allowance.

Remember to shut down internet programmes when you are not using them. for example the sky news website with its video like graphics on the front and ads appearing across the screen as well and some websites refresh every minute or two. you may think your screen is static but in each of those scenarios you are biting into your download allowance even when you are streaming.

thank god for 3, 15gb download allowance :D

    30GB.

It's not a great price and it is cheaper to just buy 2 or 3 modems and switch them over when you reach the cap.

€79.96 including vat for 60gb makes a little more sense...I really hope a GB war isn't on the horizon, it's hard enough download 10gb a month...

What €79.96 do you mean? Or are you suggesting a package?

Since when are o2 charging for going over the 10 gig?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,800 ✭✭✭Senna

I used over 30gb in January, thank god they didn't charge me, it would have been €1200. Last year every second month was up about 20gb and never less than 11/12gb.
They did say i would get a warning if i went over my allowance and if i did go over, the following month would be on "fair usage", i checked this twice and took down the names and times of the people that told me. My phone bill is huge (normal calls) and i been with them for 8/9 years, wonder if they are giving me some lee-way?
But if they do phone me and tell me i'm on fair usage i'll just tell them i'm cancelling and moving network.

I'm guessing you haven't heard of Mininova, Online gaming, online gaming on ps3, updates on ps3, heavy internet browsering..

    And we have 15GB

Also @ The O2 thing, Why not just get 2 three modems? Will cost 40euro a month.. but you'll get 30GB

comparing like with like then o2 provide a 7.5GB cap for their 12month contract which costs €25 a month and three offer 15GB for €20 over 12 months so you would need 4 o2 modems to match most dsl broadband services and three offer twice the download that o2 offer for €5 less!.

How do you know when your bill is due, I got O2 Broadband in October 09 and my first bill arrived in May 2010 for €120 and they didn't even tell me it was due. Now i hear you have to log on to O2.ie to see your account but I receive no verification message to verify my account

Don't drag up year old threads to ask an irrelevant question. You need to ask O2 when your bill is due.
