Alcoholic drinks of yesteryear.

Anybody remember Furstenburg? Was my first alcoholic tipple (apart from one illicit bottle of sherry) as it always seemed to make my mum drunk really quickly :-) and I had to find out if it would do the same for me. It did.

And let us never forget Breo. That vile tea colored concoction that actually tasted like the water twelve used dishclothes were boiled in. Blegh.

Any other memories of pub drinks of bygone era's?

Furstenberg. The original wifebeater brew. Especially when used to wash down a few HunHar schnapps (not Archer's peach flavour crap). Few of those in The 19th O'Connell would set you up nicely for flinging garliccheeseychips around the 16A as it was all gonna kick-off.

    Guinness Light. Phewwwyy.

2cd drink I was ever asked for in my first ever hotel bar. Told them I had loads of experience and some feckin Granny ordered a "snowball". No idea what the hell that was. Had to ask the Bar Manager. Who I had just asked how to pour a pint of bitter, as I had never seen a bitter tap before.

I believe the gig was up. Fairly obvious I had never worked a bar before

i used to drink smirnoff mule when i was about 17 (late 90s). It came in a copper coloured bottle. It was vodka and ginger beer I think. Haven't seen it in years long with countless alcopops that were popular at the time like woody's and hooch.

I remember my mother used to always drink Dubonnet when I was a kid. I know it still exists but I haven't heard of anyone drinking it in about 20 years according to wiki it's similar to Buckfast :pac:

Southie and Red. Both drinks exist but it's been about 15 years since I've heard anyone order one.

Chinzano Bianco. Was very popular back in the day. Think there's still a bottle of it in the pub..bet it's vintage now :D

Labatts ? not sure if thats the correct spelling ... but it was a lager. Well promoted in the local..lots of freebies when companies actually gave stuff away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,571 ✭✭✭✭Frisbee

You could still get Labbatt Ice up until last year in some offo's...

    Double Diamond was another.

Excuse my ignorance but is Holsten Pils still on the market? I drank it now and again in the mid-eighties but I haven't seen it in years (not that I've been looking for it as I've only drank Guinness for the past 20 years).

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 10,666 Mod ✭✭✭✭humberklog

    Holsten's still widely available Wish.

I went out with a bird in the 80's and she drank Satzenbrau and a few Bicardi and Lime?!. She had to go! (Cost too much).

Beamish Red is still available but you won't find it in many pubs. I had some a couple of months ago in the Blarney Inn on Nassau Street. Tis a lovely scoop altogether.

When I was a kid Babycham and Snowball would be offered to the young ladies at Christmas while the older ladies would sip their Cinzano's.

I was nearly sure I could remember drinking Breo but a quick google suggests it was off the market by the time I was 14.... doesn't mean I didn't of course but fairly unlikely!

You can still get Kilkenny. You're right though - it's not nice.

Remember the non-alcoholic drinks like Kaliber and Buckler. I tried drinking them when I was driving - now they tasted like boiled underwear.

"TNT Dynamite white cider anyone? Or was I drunk at the time?"

Nope, you weren't drunk. Not before drinking that vile poison anyway. Anyone remember Le Piat D'Or? Supposedly good French vino that was actually swill. The tagline was "The French adore Le Piat D'Or". Although when I got to France I discovered none of them had even heard of it...

Kilkenny is lovely... Nice flow on the tap in the Bull and Castle!! I think anyone that likes Guiness would appreciate Kilkenny...

Used to drink the following flagons:
    Orchard Glow
    Autumn Gold
    Special Vat
    Merrydown
    Devil's Bit
    Lindon Village
thats all i can remeber although some off-licences tended to carry certain brands for a while and then they'd dissapear without trace only to be replaced with some other muck!

Yeah...they briefly had an advertising tag-line that went "Woodpecker Cider...gets you out of your tree" until it was banned by the joyless PC brigade.

Awww...pictures of lovelies on cans of Tennents...that brings me back. I'm sure they only did that for the UK market only.

I was a bit young to be drinking at that stage but remember wanting to grow up REALLY fast so I could be like my father and uncle who used to drink them by the bucket load at Christmas and crack dirty jokes about the girls. I am not sure if they were easily available in Ireland or if you had to take a trip up North or across the water to get your hands on them.

There is a bit of history about them here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,919 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

Kilkenny is ridiculously popular over here in Oz. It's the most popular drink amongst the POMs. They have the stuff runnin through their veins at this stage but imo it's absolutely vile. I'd never even seen it in a pub in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 656 ✭✭✭Bearhunter

KK is fuggin awful stuff. It's just Smithwick's with nitrogen added to it.

What ever happened to the Guinness Brewhouse Series? Weren't there supposed to be 20 of them or something? I think only about 3 came out. Probably just as well, none of them are great.
