That's a great god damn deal in fairness.

    Brilliant amp.

Excellent deal, way cheaper than what I paid for it earlier on in the year. Bought mine from Richer Sounds who are also brilliant.

Have my PS3 going tru it and the HD sound is unreal for Blu Rays and Games.

how much would speakers cost for this?
anything decent set for close to 100e?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,027 ✭✭✭eddiem74

Yeah, I am sure John Mc from RS will match anything, and especially for a Boards member. A recent post from him on their commerical forum here on boards mentioning the 606.

I picked up a silver 606 from them a few months back via their open box sale here on boards, and service/delivery was excellent. A great starter amp !!

I am also sure they could recommend some suitable speakers if needed.

I have this amp, with PS3, Xbox360, Wii, HiFi and Sky HD all going through it, and can concur that it is absolutely superb. I bought it from Richer Sounds when it first came out, and they were brilliant. I had a couple of questions regarding set up, and they got helped me out straight away each time.

The only niggle I have with it (and it is minor) is that you can't rename the inputs, but it's no big deal.

eolhc, to match this up with €100 speakers would be criminal, to be honest. It deserves a decent pairing.

Ok, so what way does this work? I've just registered with RS.
Do I email them first or PM John on here? Do I purchase now and contact them later?? It's not very clear on the site.

ring them up in belfast. and quote that will the price beat the other site i posted and tell them you are from boards and you should get cheaper shipping.

if there is any confusion ask to speak to john.

    totally agree.

i got a set of kef 2005.2 off komplette a bit back for 500 euro. sounds great with the onkyo. if you get cheap speakers i think you will blow them up with this amp. i don't know. try over on avforums for advice on whats the best speakers for this.

Not for €100. About €300 (or less) will get you the Jamo A102 HCS5 5.1 set. Best value under €500. Really fantastic sound. See here. Richer Sounds do not stock Jamo. The have cheap Tannoys, but these do not compare to the Jamos.

Yeah, thanks guys, sort of guessed that about the price of speakers... have a nice 720p infocus projector and it would be nice to have an amp like this for the sound. But space is a bit limited and this would probably be overkill for what my needs at the moment. But the price looks great for the functions you get, maybe in a few months I'll convince myself to upgrade

That is a great price alright, for what is a great amp. I also got one some months ago from RS sale, and think it's a great amp.

I must look into those Jamo's mentioned, as my current speakers aren't the best.

    Guys,

Those of you who have this 606 receiver - have you had any problems? I've seem a couple of posts over at avforums about a regular occurance of having to send back and get replacement models. Dont know whether it is heat related etc.

I'm about to buy a new receiver, but was looking at the Yammy 863/763 or the Sony STR2400ES - but having a nightmare trying to find somewhere that has them in stock. The 606 could be a good alternative.y

No problems whatsoever. I'd marry mine if it was legal.

I had some heat issues. I had to take the back off the tv cabinet. you dont want to put anything on top of this maybe a fry breakfast.

I have had a 606 for near 6 months now that I got from RS and no probs at all. The Onkyo's do run hot so you need to give it plenty of breathing room. The 875 was available for a great price when I got my 606 and I decided against the 875 because it was renowned for running extremely hot and doing the measurements at home it would not have fitted well in my setup - couple this with the knowledge that the 875 was soon to be replaced; as it has since been.

Overall though the 606 is a great piece of kit. I have 4 x Monitor Audio Radius 90's, 1 x Radius 225 for centre and an RSW12 as the Sub. I do not crack up the volume much but when I do it is cracking! By some sheer chance I had ZZ Top, in the PS3, on over the the holidays and I could not believe the quality of the sound when it was turned up - my daughter was doing air guitar very well:D Other than ZZ top it is used for gaming and TV.

Buy one at that price - you will not be dissappointed. Enough inputs to satify all you can throw at it.

I've been looking at getting one of these beauties for months now and methinks this is my chance - mail sent to Mr John Mc...
    :)

emailed to John about it today and he matches price on black and silver and shipping is free.

RS.com has the 806 for 399 .. me wonders whether the extra 100 are worth the money... (shipping from UK would be £20 - cause its bigger)

Would John match the price for the 806?

The 806 has 1080p upscaling with faroudja upscaler. It's more highly regarded than the 1080i upscaler in the 606.

is it possible to get good (but at the same time cheap) speakers at all. None of the uk sites seem to ship speakers like the Jamo's to Ireland.

I got my jamo's from ebay.uk from spatialdirect. Here is a link to their web shop and the Jamos

    Mine were €260 delivered.

    Now you tell me. :)

I was like the OP and was unable to get anyone to deliver to Ireland a few months ago. Were as low as £200 online, but would not deliver. Eventually I got them on special order from Harvy Normals for about E320, cause I had my new Sony DA2400es (from richers) with no speakers. Peats-The -Robbers wanted E500 but are now reduced to a slightly less robbing E429 (how nice of them).

With just 60W of power, would the Jamo's not be a bit weak for the 606?

    Sorry for going OT.

    Nay.

They will be fine. They are 6ohm. Just set yur receiver to 4ohm instead of 8ohm. Even at 60W per channel you will seldom turn it up beyond halfway. And with their 200W subwoofer it will really blow yur brains out

Im looking for a receiver at the mo and the Onkyo 806 is the one that people appear to be sending back due to some problem about it not being able to handle a full HD signal. I saw there was a fix for this but alot of people reported that it didnt work. Onkyo said they were rectifying the problem but i have not heard anymore about it.

I was between the Denon AVR2309 and the Onkyo 806 but if the 806 has now dropped to 399 then its a bargain.

yes John said he will get the 806 in black for £399.95. (silver for 480) + £20 shipping...

had a look at the onkyo site - the 806 is substantially bigger...

my biggest turn-off is the "blue got problem" what a number of people report. "If" Onkyo is working on a solution, I would want to have reassurance that I get mine fixed under warranty....

Wow, that's quite a price difference for the silver one (which I'd prefer) but at 399 for the black one, it's hard to pass.

I haven't heard of the 806 full hd problem, whats that about?

Basically it appears to be that when outputting 1080p signal to your onkyo 806 there are random blue dots showing up when connecting via PS3 or Xbox. Upconverting to 1080p they dont show up so its just when using the full signal.

You can see a thread on it here.

And the fix that someone suggested is here but it did not work for everybody.

Well I would never have a ps3 or xbox connected. Maybe a Wii, but it will be mainly for upscaling sky+ and sd dvd's. I would also have a bluray player connected.
Would the bule dot appear in these instances?

Not sure to be honest, I am prob gonna go for the 806 but might get John to test one out for this pixel issue first. Your best bet would be to post on the avforums one of the links above to see if anyone has a solution yet or if it there are newer versions out without the prob.

I've been reading up on the 806 on avforums.
It seems the blue dot issue plauges most owners. It occurs on all 1080p sources, including blyray players.
There seems to be work arounds and some mention of a board replacement to fix the issue, but this would put me off buying.

Look at the suppliers rather than blaming the shops.
If you read my post you would see.... The supplier to Harvey Norman was the main agent for Jamo in Ireland. Peats-The-Robbers were €170 dearer than Harvey Norman at the time and are still €100 different. Harvey Norman ordered them specially for me.

So I do not blame the supplier. Peats-The-Robbers are just living up to their nickname.

    @ Kintarō Hattori,

I think it's reasonable for people to make unfavourable comparisons when there is such an obvious disparity in prices, given that this is a Bargain Forum. The issue of where/how Peats source their stock is neither here nor there when a person is going out to spend their money on kit like this. Sniping when Peats is mentioned in the context of prices, given that you've stated publicly on Boards that you work for them, isn't really doing Peats any favours. More competitive pricing might.

Absolutely people should be free to question prices. However I do feel with ANY shop that it is unfair for folk to outright blame the retailer when in many instances they are being charged through the nose by the distis/manufacturer.

When I see companies (including one I work for) being labelled as robbers I am compelled to respond to that statement in a level headed manner. I haven't been sniping, I've merely made a statement and asked a question.

    Get it right.

    @Kintarō; Hattori,

    You say:
I haven't been sniping, I've merely made a statement and asked a question.

If you care to look at your post timed 00.02, you'd see that you quoted the answer to your question
    Who supplied Harvey Norman?

The answer is in your own post:
The supplier to Harvey Norman was the main agent for Jamo in Ireland.

    As for:
However I do feel with ANY shop that it is unfair for folk to outright blame the retailer when in many instances they are being charged through the nose by the distis/manufacturer.

The person going into a shop isn't told what the cost from the supplier is, they just see the price they're asked to pay. Peats may well be facing a different price structure form their suppliers, but that's a matter for Peats to address to be competitive with other operators.
When I see companies (including one I work for) being labelled as robbers I am compelled to respond to that statement in a level headed manner.

Try feeling compelled to say what the mark-up for Peats is on the item in question if you want to make clear why there should be such a price disparity on the item and dispel the suggestion of overcharging in a forthright way. Publicly suggesting that people blame your supplier(s) for the higher prices without giving some sort of example is facile.

As for the sniping remark, I find it difficult to regard your posting here as anything else, but did not mean it in a personally offensive way.

As for telling me to " Get it right " ? You needn't worry, I've got it right ok.

I don't wish to irritate the Mods or readers on this forum by having a tit-for-tat argument with you or dragging this any further off-topic than it already is so I'll refrain from posting further on this thread and let people make their own judgement.

    Ritz.

I too shall make this my last post on this matter:

Yes I quoted what someone said on the internet- that obviously makes what they said factual and accurate.

You're absolutely correct that a customer doesn't know/doesn't care about suppliers, costs etc. I have always said the web is and will be cheaper than us, we have been trying to get prices down. You are aware I'm sure that disti's don't charge a flat cost to each individual reseller, there are pricing disparities and we will be looking into our cost price for this item.

I most certainly am not going to list cost prices or markups here and for you to think that I or any other retailer would is simply ill thought out. There are times when retailers are quilty of high prices but you simply cannot flat out blame them all of the time and this is reflected in my post. Quite often manufacturers/distis are responsible for the higher prices in this country.

I'm simply saying don't always blame the retailer. Sometimes it genuinely isn't their fault.

You assure me? How can you assure me. Your company wanted €499 and now €429. And Harvey Norman €319.

First of all I rang the supplier of 'JAMO' in the UK. They said the main agents in Ireland were different. They gave me the name and number of the Irish main agents. Rang them for a list of Irish retailers. Harvey Norman was on the list. Rang them for best price. They rang back with €319. They may or may not have had €50 profit but a sure they had some profit. I dont recall Peats being on that list. If not they are by-passing the main agents here and in turn buying cheaper.

But for sure Peats could buy from main Irish agent for well under €300 or source from UK for £180 - £190. If they prefer to buy from neither the Main agents or direct from UK and charge me the customer the extra ammount I have every right to refer to them by their nickname; 'Peats-The-Robbers'. I have no problem paying some more over an online price.

I do understand that a shop has higher overheads. But when a bricks'n-mortar store is double the online price, we can all see we are being ripped off.

Sorry to original poster for going OT.
