    Hi all,

First post in here.Hope this hasent been covered before, sorry if it has.I am hopeing to travel to Milan this year for a football match.Never have been to Italy before. Was just wondering what the prices are like in Italy, esp Milan as that is where I would be.I plan to stay for a weekend(fri-mon).Is it tourist friendly, taxis, buses etc? What hotels would you recommennd to stay in in the city?Basically anything about the city would be of great help as if the costs a low I wouldsaty for a week.I know this is a bit out of place here but if any body has been to a football match in the San Siro lately is there much hassle with tickets etc?I can ask that in the soccer forum if people dont have answers for that!

    Thanks all in advanced:)

Hi, myself and my OH were in Milan for a long weekend in November, during which we went to a match at San Siro. In regards to tickets for the match, we found it a very easy process. We booked/paid for the tickets on line and then picked them up at the stadium just before the match, which was very effecient and well orgainsed - just remember to take your passport with you.

Public transport in Milan is excellent. You can buy a 24hr or 48hr ticket which you can then use on the metro, buses or trams, which run all over the city.

As a city, Milan is probably a bit more expensive than other parts of Italy but this is because it is the main business centre. Likewise hotels can be more expensive than other parts of the city. A good place to look for hotels is tripadvisor.ie or venere.com

Despite being a business city, there are still lots of things to do and see in Milan. Leonardo's Last Supper is there along with some good museums and Castello Sforzesco which is well worth a visit.

Zemphis has covered most of it, so I'll just add in my own 2 cents. I haven't been in Milan since 2007 but I doubt it's changed much. It's a nice city (cathedral, castle etc) but I'd find it fairly difficult to spend more than a weekend there. I went for 6 days but only spent 2 in Milan and then spent 2 days in Como (about an hour north, on the Swiss border and definitely worth a visit) and 2 in Venice.

For the really big matches, you'll find it difficult to get tickets but you shouldn't have a problem for games against the smaller teams. We managed to get tickets for the Milan-Celtic game in the 4th round of the Champions League but couldn't get them for the Milan derby the weekend after. As has been said, don't forget to bring your passport to the stadium.

Italian food is the best there is and as with most cities, eat away from the touristy areas and you'll find the prices a lot more reasonable. Going out can be very expensive though.

The only dodgy area I know in the city is around the central station, so don't book a hotel there. We stayed in a cheap hotel around there and although we didn't have any problems, the hotel was used by prostitutes and there were a lot of pickpockets around.

Thanks for all the advice, very helpful.

If you dont mind me asking what website did you book your tickets online?

A hotel I have been looking at are Hotel Brunellesch.Did anybody stay here?Near the Buisness districts.

Growing up watching James Richardson on Channel 4 sitting in Milan on a sunny day having Ice-cream and reading a paper always made me envious!Always promisied myself to go to Milan at some stage.

    Thanks again for the replies:)

We went to see Inter Milan against Panathinaikos and got the tickets at http://www.inter.it/en/biglietti/acquista.html

We stayed at Hotel Canada which was grand though the traffic on the road made the room very noisy. This was near the historical centre and the area was fine.
