New Joe Blow pump - Am I doing something wrong?

So I was on Santa's nice list this year, and he delivered a nice new Joe Blow pump and a bike stand for DIY maintenance.

I tried the pump this morning, but it's not as I expected it. I have Presta valves, so having loosened the nozzle on the valve, I pushed the P side of the pump head onto the valve as far as it would go, and pushed the locking lever over to the lock position.

However, when I try to pump, the air seems to fly out of the other side (Schrader side) of the pump head, and the gauge needle goes up momentarily, before dropping back to zero. Am I doing something wrong?
