Greatest Movie Ever

So, what do you think is the greatest movie ever? Not necessarily your favourite, just what you consider the greatest. Also, give a reason why you think so.

I'll start, I think Apocalypse Now is the greatest. It's a brilliant sweeping epic with a great story, and possibly one of the best "sets" ever used.

soundtrack, friendship, drink, eels, the countryside, and a want to better oneself.

Flash Gordon was on at least 4 times over the Christmas holdiays.

It doesn't get any less so-bad-it's-good funny. Really doesn't.

Apocalypse now followed by snatch or trainspotting.Epic films!

Freddy Got Fingered is worse than Black Knight.

Its really hard to say what is the best film as their is so much choice from different categories

And one of the best scripts ever written!

Good quesstion though OP. Like if someone had never seen a movie ever, you wouldn't neccesarily sit them down in front of something like Buffallo 66 or The Royal Tenenbaums (movies with marvelous scripts, direction and acting), to try and explain movies to them, nor would you put them in front of something really cinematic and special effectsy like The Matrix or The Dark Knight. You'd totally put on Apocolypse Now (or, I'd suggest,The Godfather) and go "Look, that's a movie!"

That film frightened me alot, I dont know what exactly about it affected me, but the scene
Where the guy is forced to shoot the kid
really didnt help the film for me.

That said it is a very good film.

Jurassic Park. Watched it about a million times as a kid (slight exaggeration) and can still watch it now and feel the same way. The effects and plot are really what make it for me.

E.T. and Schindlers List are close though, with E.T. being absolute magic and Schindlers List being far more emotional than the others.

    Jurassic Park 2 ftw.

Also Con Air rules for creepyness and awful accents

Now I sincerely doubt anyone will agree with me on this one, but personally I feel this one has everything. First 20 mins or so shot in black & white, beautiful scenery, direction, excellent cast, Jean Reno is oustanding. Film contains action, comedy, but is mostly drama. All in all, my favourite film.

When you say it "didn't help the fim for [you]", what do you mean? That it put you off it for being too hard to watch?

I found such scenes moving and powerful, which add to its greatness as a film.

Found it a bit spacey tbh. Sort of drifted along in beutifully shot undewater scenes, something you'd get lost in, not something you'd watch to get excited. Possibly the most relaxing film i've seen.

Favourites would be the Green Mile.
Or watch Das Boot with a set of headphones in the dark. You will be seated in a submarine being shot at for 3 hours. Scary stuff.

It really added to the overall effect of the film, but I think I was a bit too young when I saw it, so that particular scene really stands out.

That said Ive never seen any other film go near that territory, so the filmakers had balls (Like feckin spacehoppers!) to include something like that.

Its a good film but that scene really kinda tainted it for me, overall though it was good.

There are 2 for me...one is a film noir called The Third Man starring Orson Welles. My English teacher in secondary school arranged for the local cinema to show it for us, and I absolutely loved it. Its a brilliant murder mystery set in post war Vienna.

In modern film, I think Bob Roberts is one of the greatest films ever. It is a mockumentary written by, directed by and starring Tim Robbins. Its a political satire following the campaign and election of a conservative politician/musician Bob Roberts. It's both funny and tragic at the same time and well worth a watch for anyone who's a fan of US politics.

    Anyone like Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey?

I had to watch it 3 times before I got it fully. At first it seems like a load of rubbish, but it really is one hell of a movie.

I'm still at the load of rubbish phase with that :( also the fact that it's referenced so much makes the opening scene really difficult to take at all seriously

Yah I can see how that would ruin it. I was lucky enough to first see it when I was about 14, so I didn't know that it was supposedly a brilliant, famous film; I'd never even heard of it.

Stick with it though, if you get to the point of liking it it's a rewarding film to watch through! An awful lot of people hate it though, I guess it's one of those films that you either love or hate; there isn't really an inbetween.

While it would only have been good in the same way the Simpsons movie was funny in parts, but watchable, Father Ted on the big screen is, alas, something we can only dream of.

Full Metal Jacket and Goodfellas are possibly my 2 all time favourites.

In recent years, I think Crash is possibly the best film I've seen.

Going off on a tangent,I think Taken starring Liam Neeson is a fantastic new(ish) film. If you didn't see it yet,get a copy. I highly recommend.

Requiem for a Dream is such a great film. Though I tend to like books/films like that. My sister said to me the other week "you like the sort of books and films that make you feel like you need to wash yourself after reading or seeing them". Requiem for a Dream is a bit like that.

It also had one of the best soundtracks (Well sound track theme, I have the full soundtrack and some of it is kinda rubbish :D) ever in a film (IMO) but now its kinda generic epic music.

Doing mundane tasks or waking up to Lux Aeterna FTW!
