    Well guys,

Anyone know if there is much stirring, Im at a loose end for a few months (heading for masters number two in sept) and am eager to get back in the field(!)

Should I just forget it and get an office job??

Well, if you need to work and you need money, then yes, you should get any job that is available to you, archaeology or not.

You could hold out on the off chance that something comes up, but you have to think of the amount of competition that there will be for those elusive jobs. Most of my Masters class are out of work at the moment, and one is finishing a contract in the middle of this month.

I've gone for the office job because I can't afford to hang about hoping. But if you can afford it go for it.

Got my Masters 8 years ago and have been digging since then. I've been out of work since November, as are most of my friends. Lots of people who I first met digging 8 years ago have now left the profession and everyone is downsizing. Directors working as supervisors, supervisors working as assistants. The future doesn't seem to look good I'm afraid.

Take anything you can get. Here in Galway I don't know anyone currently working in archaeology, myself included. The work just isn't out there.

Of a quick head count, I'd say 2 (perhaps a third if they were rehired after the Christmas break) of the 30-odd archaeologists I know are working on sites. One more is in a paid research position. Apart from that, they're in banking, IT, accounting... anything they can get really.

Got a mail from ADS looking for 2 assistants outside Belfast for a month. I'd say there'll be a lot of competition for it though... I'm staying put where I am.

There is certainly alot of people getting out of archaeology... most people ive spoken to about it want to get into teaching.
Its tough though because when iam digging iam most happy.... tried consultancy for London for 6mts (office based EIS's, DBA's etc etc) and it was great for a while but i missed being outside digging big time... Think a mixture of both is good... but unfortunatly its not a perfect world :)
