i've been invited to play in a comp in doonbeg, west clare next week - anyone familiar with this club?
i've taken a look at the website and it looks awesome, prob the best links course in the island of ireland
one of the holes has a green out in the ocean i think
let me know if you've played there

Its decent, very Americanized and very far from being the best links in the country...

very americanised in the sense of manicured greens, bunkers etc?
surely thats not a bad thing?

someone told me that their signature hole has a green built on a hidden platform that they can raise depending on conditions of the day? i'm a little sceptical but will ye know later next week

Em ... right to be sceptical ... no such thing at Doonbeg. Played it a few times and it's a lovely course tho you might raise an eyebrow at the bunker in the middle of one of the greens. It's tough with punishing long rough ... bring lots of balls! They do have a 100yd par three whose green is on the ocean's edge (not out in the ocean) and which essentially only allows for hitting the green, anywhere else is usually in serious bother. Enjoy.

Played Doonbeg on New Years eve. It's a lovely golf course and in decent condition. They have made the decision to leave the grass on the greens long for the winterr but they roll them so they are very true if a little slow. It does not however compare to the likes of Lahinch, Ballybunion or Enniscrone due the restriction of access to the really big dunes because of the snail.
By the way the 100 yard par 3 is out of play for the winter

Doonbeg is alright but not a patch on some of the other links courses in the country, had a great day last year and played lahinch in the morning and Doonbeg in the afternoon. There is no comparision between the two in my opinion, Lahinch was far superior

thanks for the comments there folks
played it yesterday afternoon and was well impressed - with a few more years maturity this will be irelands finest links course by a country mile
and i regularly play links across ireland
some spectacular holes i have to say - namely the first, fourth, sixth, seventh, eleventh, fourteenth (when open), and eighteenth
the facilities are also top notch, beautiful design of the clubhouse, courtyard, hotel etc
well done doonbeg, i'll be returning in the summer
i suggest you do too - great deals at the min also, think you can get a round for as little as €70
