Macbook Pro wont burn to DVDs

The superdrive in my macbook pro won't read DVD+R DL discs I recently bought in Tescos. It seems the UJ-857D model is very picky when it comes to what DVD media it will support. Verbatims work fine but these new discs...it wont burn to them.

Is there some aftermarket firmware or hack that will improve the drive's ability to burn to certain media? I've tried googling but I can only find references to region free hacks.

Mind you, these discs work fine in my external LG DVD writer. I find it completely unacceptable that the MBP wont accept certain discs....there must be something that can be done. I don't have the external drive with me at all times and it is big and bulky - there is no reason why the high end apple notebook should not be able to burn all DVD media.

I've discovered that Apple released an updated firmware for the Superdrives for this exact reason in 2007 but pulled it soon afterwards?

Has anyone come across this problem before?
