    Hi all

nice short thread here, just wondering what the minimum wage is?

Have googled it now, but it's only giving July 2007 as the most recent update, and I know it rises each year.

    Cheers

Yeah thats what is says online alright, but thats as and from July 2007. Surely it has risen since then. Im in a professional job the last 2 years, but when I was on minimum wage it was about that. If it hasn't at least hit €9 by now, I think thats shocking!!

I know, not the time to be complaining about that!!

its still 8.65 AFAIK, however its not quiet as simple as that for new employees entering the work force.

Under 18's entitled to a minimum of 6.06
Over 18's in first year of employment is entitled to 6.92
Over 18's in second year of employment is entitled to 7.79

This also applies to any new employ over the age of 18 enterting the work force for the first time.

So your really only entitled to 8.65 if you have 2 years work behind you since you were 18.

I've had problems getting my employer to enforce this before so had to research it fully.

No it didnt its still €8.65, whats shocking about earning over €17,500 for an entry level job that requires no skill apart from being 20 and having had a job for the last 2 years??

the cost to the employer is well over €21,000 per year when you include holidays and employers taxes, take any small shop that employs 6 or 7 people on min wage and thats a wage bill of over €150,000 before any other bills are taken into consideration.

also remember that with experience that rate under the jlc goes up every year, its not easy being an employer.

I'd imagine that it's quite challenging paying Dublin prices for rent, food etc if you're only earning less than E18k.

Thats true mary , but most of the people live outside of dublin and dublin has a public transport system of sorts , in rural areas people need cars more so thats an added expense for them, swings and roundabouts,

its still a sizable wage to pay someone at entry level.
