    hi

have only recently bought my first acoustic guitar but eventually im hoping to play the electric.

the type of music id love to be able to play would be editors, interpol, the strokes, bloc party, the killers, arctic monkeys, fallout boy, glasvegas etc (that type of genre).

now is it possible to play music like this on the one elctric guitar or wud u need a few different guitars? i know the sound might be better if u had a different guitar for each band but it wud be cool to be able to play bands like these on the one guitar

    thanks

Yup, you can play any guitar music on any guitar really. It won't sound exactly like the bands in question but they use thousands worth of equipment.

yeah of course you can play all these on one electric guitar. any type of electric would do for a beginner, and then you can zone in on the sound you want down the line by buyin a specific guitar that your favourite band uses (eg, Interpol use Telecasters etc, Artic Monkeys use Stratocasters etc...AFAIK). but, as far as your concerned, you can still achieve their sound with most electric guitars. you could also try a few different effects pedals and see if you can get a sound like theirs...mainly distortions, overdrives etc.

    dunno if that helps!? ;)

    cheers. great to know.

so are there certain guitars that are better than others for playing the type of music such as the bands above?

    thanks

no not necessarily. well...some of the bands mentioned above will be on the more cleaner, "twangy-er", trebely side of things. sticking with the interpol/artic monkeys example, a gibson les paul could be used to play an artic monkeys song, but it would sound very deep, and wouldnt really suit. it would still ok, and you can still use one to play the song (i play a gibson SG myself, and i use it to play everything). but an artic monkeys song would essentially sound better on a fender type guitar.

    im rambling....

As a beginner, you wouldnt be buying a fender or a gibson (at least i dont think you will...if your are...your a lucky bastard  ). just get a good cheap all rounder...as the years go by, youll play other guitars and, slowly, begin to notice specific guitar sounds from different guitars. you can then start saving the mula and buy a proper one...thats what i did anyway

so wud i need to spend big to get an all rounder to start with? ie one that i cud try and play all them bands with that gives a 'decent' sound for each one

Well, how much money do you want to spend. If you get a decent enough guitar (and especially if you're only starting to play), you won't hear much of a difference really.

Please try to avoid using txt spk while posting also. Thanks.

    no not at all.

the first guitar i got was around £150 (note pounds) that was just some random cheap-ish guitar, but it was great for learning on. then around 2 years later i bought an Ibanez RG-270 (which i still have and love), for around £500. this was my first "proper"-ish guitar. kinda bottom of the Ibanez scale, but still a cracking guitar, will never get rid of it!! then a few years ago i bought the SG for €1500...****in love that guitar, its a bit deep and bass-ey but its still unreal...just purrs.

to start of with...spend around €200. you could even get one of those packs with the guitar and amp and all that...just to get ya started. dont be afraid to buy cheap stuff. i know guys that are a lot better than me, and they still play €150 squires cos they just like the feel. play a few and pick out the one that feels the best. dont feel like you have to buy a certain standard

Unless you can play the guitar at this point I wouldn't be worrying about these things. Keep it simple, learn the basics and practice practice practice. Enjoy and best of luck!!!

take a look at the Vox AD30VT amp. it's a modelling amp, and models the sound of 11 different types of amps (and 11 different effects). there's a good demo of it here:
    http://www.gearwire.com/vox-ad30-vt.html

it can be got for 140 quid from GAK:

I'm kind of in the same boat as yourself and this is the one I'm gonna get. I think this will allow for more variation of sound than whichever guitar you select.

If your only beginning then you wont even be able to notice the difference between the sounds yet so dont worry! i bought my first guitar in ARGOS, yes argos and i played everything on it so just buy, as someone said, a guitar and amp combo and youll be fine for a year or so!

If i was to get an all rounder id buy something like a les paul because theres less of a distinct sound from them than there are from other guitars such as a tele or a strat which are very twangy etc...
