Should I deleate Norton befroe I download the new stuff? Any tips appreciated as I am a bit of a novice at this. ;) Daisy.

Thanks for the advice folks. I would have thought I would remove noton after I install AVG, but will take your advice and remove it forist. Dos this not leave me exposed to threats for a few minutes, or is it safe enough? Daisy.

As long as you're not browsing dodgy sites on the internet or opening any dodgy emails you should be OK.

if you're worried about browser security or viruses on the internet, i would recommend Avast AntiVirus free edition. It's interface looks dog ugly to use to be honest, but it's quite easy. The advantage which avast has over avg is that it's channel of scanning is more comprehensive and more detailed so it's more likely to pick up a virus being installed than avg is. Also if you use outlook or other email software on your computer, or indeed limewire or other p2p software, it will also scan everything that happens there - something which avg lacks.

Also, on a sidenote, norton is brutal. I wouldn't use internet security even if i got it for free. It's original issues, and a lot still exist, was that it used to block images on websites, which caused a lot of hassle for web developers in the beginning. Also there are numerous types of vulnerabilities that it is particularly blind too. These have yet to be fixed. And finally, norton, usually prevents the installation and operation of a mobile broadband modem, which would appear to be a small problem but it's a big problem, especially when users are paying for something that doesn't work.

Prefer Avast myself too. I switched again to Avira Anti Vir, seems higher rated than AVG and Avast. Not sure if email protection is in the new version but I use GMail! http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html

AVG is good, but it has become horribly bloated since the last time i used it.

afaik there's no 64bit free version either loved to be proved wrong though.

avast is quite decent and is 64bit.

Besides disliking the interface :p a couple well founded reasons

    http://www.inanis.net/blog/index.php/2008/11/01/avg-8-vista-sp1-poor-network-performance/

    http://securityandthe.net/2008/11/10/avg-virus-scanner-removes-critical-windows-file/

In short the developers of AVG need to get the thumb out of their own asses.

also avg does not like to be installed in safe mode, quite an annoyance to me as well.

You can't uninstall nortons like other programs. You have to use their own uninstaller or you will be left loads of semi installed bits left over. Get the uninstaller here. http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Agreed completely. I've nothing against AVG, but its certainly not the best.

Thanks for that link greglo. Norton just keeps expanding itself all over the place. Use this tool. Trust me. :)

Sorry lads, if a bit OT but I posted earlier.

Had Avast and the right clicking a file and scan with Avast file was handy. Avira Anti Vir doesn't have that. What's the handiest way to scan a single file or folder with it?

Like Avira but this would put me off.

Any of ye try Online Armor Personal Firewall? Prefer it to Comodo and Zonealarm and seems very highly rated?

My Avira has right click-scan functionality:

    Have you tried re-installing it?

The new AVG is very poor, I advise people against using it, do a full uninstall and use the likes of Avira or Avast instead would be my recommendation
