Sealskinz vs Overshoes (COLD TOES SOLUTIONS!)

Hi, I went out for a ride today (road cycling), a nice cold New Years day and my toes nearly fell off! I have the winter soles in the shoes, but they still seem really ventilated, which is not what I want! Well 2 solutions I had in mind were overshoes or Sealskinz.

I don't want those neoprene/wetsuit material overshoes as I don't go out in the wet, so waterproofing is not essential. I was looking at the dhb ones on Wiggle here, but they seem to be all sold out! The Sealskinz seem to be designed for waterproofing, what are they like at keeping your feet warm? Maybe the mid-thermal one would be good!

What do you think I should do? Sealskinz, Overshoes, both, neither? ;)

P.S. Can anyone reccomend a nice neat/close fitting full finger glove for road cycling? I have fingerless ones, and I don't want big padded ones either! :D

I use these these. Might be a solution for you.

I have some Specialized Deflect ones which may suit. Bought from Cycleways. No complaints, except they're a bit crap in the wet, but that's not an issue for you.

eta: I also have some thin rubbery Specialized overshoes which are nicely windproof, but can't totally recommend them as they're falling to bit after only a couple of months. That may just be because I got them too small for my MTB shoes, so the shoe is wearing them out. They're very neat though.

    Both! Can't beat the sealskinz/overshoes combo :)

For gloves, I have a pair of Pearl Izumi from cycleways and like 'em a lot

You say you don't go out in the rain but what if it starts raining while you are out!

I use both, but if I was only doing one or the other I would go for overshoes- you only need one pair and they keep your shoes clean too. The Sealskins are added in mainly for the _really_ bad situations where there is a chance that the overshoes will be defeated.

The main benefit of the overshoes besides waterproofing is wind blocking as most summer cycling shoes are highly ventilated- so even a relatively thin overshoe makes a big difference.

A small thread hijack! I am seeing that most overshoes are up to 46. Is there something that would fit my 48 shimano shoes? :D

Jaysus you've got clown feet! (unless you're 7 foot tall!)

Most 46's should stretch to cover your shoes -and the tighter they are, the more aero :)

Merino wool socks and Endura road overshoes. Can't beat that combo! Feet nice and toasty and dry.

BBB Waterflex, which I have (as does Tiny) come in 47/48. Don't get a smaller size hoping to stretch them, I have 45/46 and they are quite a tight fit as it is on my 45-size shoes.

Actually, I have a pair of Saunier Duval overshoes that are far too big for me -you're welcome to try em out for size... good quality neoprene -am actually gutted they don't fit me

I have the Endura Road Overshoe. Anyone else find that their feet sweat a lot in them. My socks do be soaking after my daily commute even in the freezing cold.

    Or how about these

gotta say the Endura wet suit style o/shoes kept my feet toasty in the freezin' cold morning.Did the 3 charities on sun and the start was delayed by an hour due to heavily frosted roads but my feet were nice and toasty.Cheap enough on Wiggle.

I got the BBB waterflex ones in my LBS for €20. I got the 41/42 size, hoping for a tight fit but when they go on, the look as if they are going to rip. Great quality though, can't wait to get the proper size 43/44, hopefully they are not too big! Thanks for the reccomendation :D

I forgot to mention that I also picked up a pair of BBB Raceshield winter gloves. They are just what I was looking for, skin tight full-finger winter gloves, just lovely!
