    Hiya!

First time posting here but a long time lurker  Great forum here by the way! Has kept me up to date as to dates for new seasons, webisodes etc.

As the title suggests do you ever feel like you are the only one in your social circle that likes BSG? Everyone seems to know a bit about Star Wars or Stargate but if you mention BSG you're branded a nerd immediately.

Do I just have frakked up friends or is this the norm?

Please be gentle with the n00b too. Thankee :o

ye there used to ust be myself and one other mate who likes it. about 9 of us watched fromthe beginning to season 1 around 1/2 way though and they said it was too heavy to we started watching something else.

i loved it and 2 of us watched season 1 and we have since got 10 or so people hooked on it over the years but it a show that takes a comitment to get into. when showing it to someone new i let them know it will be almost 4 hours long because i show them the miniseries and episode 1 "33"

My mates roll their eyes anytime I mention BSG. Star Trek has ruined peoples perception on SCI-FI. All the hatred for SCI-FI is based around the idea that if you watch it you are gonna have to go to a convention and dress up as a klingon.

My mates say stuff like "I hate Sci-fi". And then I ask what their favourite film is and they say "The Matrix".

I fight a losing battle every day trying to get people to watch it. Hopefully Sky show repeats more often like they do with Stargate and then maybe people will stumble across how great it is.

if you like DS9 and people hear about it you will probably end up a virgin longer than nature intended.

I've watched BSG from the start, i'm a long time Sci Fi fan so that's not strange but I have managed to convert people to it. My father for one would never watch anything that even mentions the word space yet he's up to date on every episode, he enjoys the political drama and parallels to our current issues on Earth.

I've converted a few other people on that pretext all of whom really really enjoy the show.

Long time fan here too. A mate dropped out after a few episodes, said it recked his head.

DS9 is my favourite Star Trek by a mile. The mention of it sends my mates into convulsions of Slagging. But the Dominion war is amazing writing. Its probably the reason why BSG floats my boat.

And keep up the good work Stakey! Convert people like your life depended on it.

I used to watch the original series when I was about 5 yrs old back in the early '80s. It was on every Thursday evening when TV only started at 2.30 pm.

Its not as weird as it sounds given they are all based on Horoscopes.

I think when it comes to BSG you fall into one of two groups, those who watch and love every moment of it and those who dislike it because it is simply too intense or political for them.

I myself think the writers of BSG are brilliant and most charactors are very well portrayed. I think most who cannot get their head around the series are that way because they watch the odd episode so are totally lost at what is going on. They tend to think it should be like Star Trek or Star Wars where there are aliens and light shows at every moment and the story works itself out at the end of each episode.

I used to be a Star Trek fan but since I started watching BSG my outlook on science fiction has changed for the better. I look back at Star Trek now and I can barely watch it as it looks weak in comparison. BSG has really pushed the boat out and it is more a drama series that happens to take place in space rather than a sci-fi series.

I agree with you there. Especially when it comes to Voyager or TNG. But Deep Space Nine from series 3 onward is still very watchable to me. The whole Dominion War was brilliantly done in the confines of the Star Trek universe. And Ronald D. Moore wrote most of it!! I think I'll watch any work he does in the future.

Whereas JJ Abrams can write his confusing crap and trick people into thinking he has a clue.

I remember not loving the first season of BSG, but the last two were great. I guess like most dramas you need to really know and understand the different characters to really appreciate the show.

This is more of a reply to the original posting

There are about 4-5 no women to my knowledge in the my group of friends that like BSG. Ive never really gotten into a Scfi show as much as i have with BSG except for Space Above and Beyond as a kid.
When it comes to the 'nerd factor' of BSG i didnt think it had one as bad as the other two scfi-shows but i wish to add two things which are not complaints more observations:
    1) Battlestar Galactica is a mouth full to say compared to star trek and star wars and far more nerdy (sp), which i think contributes to the problem.

    2) A short story that happened to my... I work in a video store and I began to watch BSG starting from the beginning during my shifts. It was during a compelling viper fight sequence that an attractive member of the opposite sex, around my age, came to the counter to rent some film, what i can't remember. While i was putting the transaction through the till, I still had my eyes glued to the action on the t.v. She then inquired to what film was I watching? I answer confidently "Ahh It is not a film but a T.V series called Battlestar Galactica". She seemed interested, I thought perhaps I had a incountered a women that might enjoy the series and that we may marry and name our children after Greek gods. But alas I was wrong.
"Oh" she said "I my dad loves that show" and walk away.
I suddenly realised that in her eyes I was a nerd.

It didn't bother me and i continued to watch the rest of the series. But I dare say had i been watching any other series or movie the reaction would have been different.

I was the only one that got it AFAIK. Most others who copped anything spotted the star sign name resemblance. The head table was called earth. :D

I dunno, I mentioned BSG out with a group of the lads one night. The disdainful looks from a couple were more due to memories of the original, and particularly the godawful Galactica 1980.
I had the same attitude myself until just over a year ago, when I accidentally saw about 10 minutes of Razor (
including the bit where Cain shoots her XO
) and I was hooked on it. Watched the first 3 seasons last January.

Anyone I know who's actually watched any of it has nothing but praise, but I do think its past contributes towards some of the negative reaction.

You know, its actually worked in its favour really. If it had taken off, they would have been made do 7 or 8 20-episode seasons. Which would mean the vast majority of episodes would be fillers. As it is we got some pretty bad filler episodes, but almost all episodes were part of the main story arc. So it did well enough not to get cancelled before it finished the story, but poorly enough so there was no pressure to pad it out. Now lets hope they don't mess up the ending...
