Vodafone Broadband

    So I got the Vodafone broadband yesterday. Our area in Nth Tipp is still without decent broadband, but we felt and improvment on Dial-Up was needed. Our neighbour has 02, one bar of it. Streams videos works fine....So went in to a general phone shop and she said 02 wasnt available in the country. Opted for the vodafone to see what happens, can always take it back. When I first plugged it in, worked very fast. Youtube buffered full very quickly. But last night and now it seems very slow, Dial-Up slow. Only GPRS is available first hand, so I have to search for the 3G one every time. Why it doesnt come up straight away I don't know. It's swapping between the word 3g and HSDPA which is better I don't know. So at the minute I'm at a total loss on what to do. What do the upload rate and download rates mean? Mine are constantly changing. It doesn't seem to show the normal rate, where with the 02 one my neighbour has drop and goes up around 300.

    There is no "normal" rate on Mobile Interent. The speed varies with signal and number of people on a mast sector. Speed can drop down to below 100kbps even on HSDPA.

    GSM = 14.4k or 28.8k
    GPRS UP TO 60k, via GSM
    EDGE UP TO 250k, via GSM, but not available on Vodaphone (O2 & Meteor)

    3G UP TO 350k
    HSDPA UPTO 1800k, 3,600k or 7200k via 3G. Full speed is only possible if only one person in the area connects and the signal is perfect, 20 people OR poor connection will drop you to 3G and/or below 100kbps.

    Mobile Internet saves the cost of line rental, but there is no guarentee that it is much faster than Dialup, though it can be as fast as basic Broadband, the latency (ping) is always poor at 110ms to 2000ms.

    Vodaphone & O2 may have different numbers of customers, different mast, (They will have separate gear even if same mast), aerials point different direction. O2 has more capacity due to EDGE, which Vodaphone doesn't have. It's possible for your neighbour to get 1200kbps and you to not even connect!

    She wither hasn't got a clue, or lied to you. The fact that your neighbour has it, and it's working, proves this. It's not a guarantee that it would always work though, and you may find the O2 connection drops to EDGE/GPRS at random times, or possibly for most of the time.

    Weather, fog in particular, can hamper the signal reception too.
