How about instead advising if the HD package is the same for Ireland?

BBC HD CAN be added manually:

10847 V 22000-5/6 (ie will be on other channels)

    C4 HD isnt available yet

I thought HD box was made by Samsung? Presumably you can't specify which manufacturer you want.

I'm definately going to go for sky HD with 3 packages. 24.95 a month plus 15 euro odd for HD against NTL's Digital Max package for 32.00 a month.

I don't have a phoneline so there's an additional charge of €37.50 for some other piece of kit instead.

I'm so glad I didn't order it last week!

How long is the warranty on these boxes? If you buy and you own it then why can you not ask for a certain brand?

We've installed Thompson, Pace and Samsung. In November fierce excitement by customers when the Samsung boxes came in. We installed them and so far we have had to replace alot of them, nothing but trouble. The Thompson boxes are not bad at all, the odd glitch but nothing a software download didn't sort out.

12 months warranty. If you ask the installer if he / she has a specific box you never know. Sometimes they would have two differant brands on board i.e. Pace and Thompson. Depends on what's in stock obviously.

I continue to boycott Sky+ and skyHD until they enable recording of other channels (it doesn't) and record / replay of FTA channels without subscription.

If you cancel after the minimum period, even existing recordings won't play. YOU own and are responsible for the dish, LNB, cable and Sky+ or SkyHD box from day1, thought they do have a virtually quibble free warrenty for the 1st year.

I bought a DVD recorder for the Subscription Sky box. I'll get a Freesat HD PVR later this year. Over the last 10 years there has been less and less reason for us to subscribe to Sky. I cancelled for the 3rd time last October and can't see us ever renewing. At least a Basic Sky box is reasonable value as all the features for FTA / UK channels work after you cancel. Actually they work BETTER.

If people boycotted the sports then Sky would not be so expensive for it or even not buy the rights and it would be free on BBC/ITV/RTE just like it used to be.

I can buy a BD title for a basic months sub and several for a months HD. A full Sky Sub for a month would buy 1 or 2 giant box sets of DVDs. We watch FTA and make our own TV now.

Last time we took out sub it was for Discovery/Nat Geo etc. There are many, many repeats.

There is very little HD content. We have BBC HD via PC card till we get the Freesat HD PVR.

Until HD becomes the standard and I don't have to pay €15 on top of the ridiculous amount I already pay them a month, I will not be getting this.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Wizard007

I seem to be the only person on here who thinks Sky is brilliant value for money. The basic pack available for less than 64c a day. HD available on 30 channels for 50c a day. As for Sky+ and Anytime tv, they allow people to watch what they want, when they want. Who wants to play around with defferant boxes, arials etc when everything is available in one simple box. Ah hello? I don't get it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Wizard007

Also, the current price of boxes is hugely subsidised for previous and new customers. A HD box without subsidy or special offer is €549 plus install, and Sky+ is €299 plus install. People don't realise what they're getting.

A basic Sky box is great value install.

A Sky+ or SkyHd is NOT as it is only a basic box if you cancel the sub. It's a rip off till they end the practice of crippling Sky+ and SkyHD on use with "Other Channels" and on FTA use recording when you cancel a sub. Since it's really only any use with a sub, only totally free supply and install is value (and they might as well remove it when you cancel).

There is also not the amount of HD pay content to justify ANY extra charge on the subscription.

There are NOT 30 channels of HD (many so HD channels have repeats, or only part time HD content). 50c a day is €15 a month / €182.50p.a. on TOP of a basic sub of 233.60 p.a., over €416 a year.

Also Nielsen and BARB figures show that the FTA channels are over 80% of peoples' viewing. ALL the Sky branded channels is less than 2% viewing time.

@Wizard007 you can get forum banned for Advertising. Your presentation of SkyHD is one sided and very misleading.

Is €1.13 a day not brillaint value? Less the price of a coke? Or a cup of coffee?

Typical misleading advertising. A minimum one year service should only ever be quoted at Monthly rate and ideally should outline the total commitment.

€34.37 per month for minimum 12 months is €412.45, a significant outlay. Over 3 years it's €1237, and over 80% or more viewing would have been free on a once off €66 DIY install box or half as much even on bank loan on a HD Freeview PVR including install.

If someone is made redundant they still have to keep paying the €34.37 a month till the year is up.

When Grundig closed the brand name was sold I think to Alba/Bush/Goodmans but Thomson I think bought the Grundig Satellite set Box factory.

Pace have made good and bad boxes over the years. Time will tell what the Samsung ones are like.

Basically you are unlikely to get a choice, though it's possible. Since they will swap a failed box pretty much no quibble in the 1st year, I'd not worry too much which model. Before Freesat boxes came out I was very tempted to get a SkyHD, but the "cripple/ no recording" concept when you cancel put me off each time Sky made a special offer.

Thread closed as I feel it has degenerated into SkyHD advertising and they don't pay for it.
