PSP in 2009

What's happening in 2009 with the PSP. In 2008 we had several exclusive games that were highly successful for the console as well as some patches, including Need For Speed and Smackdown.

We didn't have a lot of games and it doesn't look as if the major ports for 2009 - Ghostbusters, Tony Hawk etc - will make the PSP roster despite making every other console roster but I would hope that the console continues and that Sony doesn't abandon the platform. I have heard rumours of a Little Big Planet being developed exclusively for PSP and possibly Guitar Hero as well, what do people think?

I'd say that piracy is killing it. I've heard rumours of a new psp release sometime next year with unhackable fw. Maybe then we'll see a lot more games released...

I don't think Sony will abandon the console, at least not in Asia, where it is still outselling the DS. The problem with console is that it is harder to market than the DS....which has currently found a niche in the market...and essentially can be sold that little bit cheaper as a result. The games are also following because of the consoles success (on the DS) but I think we should be thankful we had Crisis Core and Gods of War because they essentially saved the PSP in Europe....

I can remember a time when HMV was selling off their PSP games in large numbers and their UMD format but now there has been an abundance of new titles released on UMD and the format is coming back. That is in thanks to the console seller of a game that is Crisis Core. The PSP needs more console selling games, and I have heard rumours of Little Big Planet and Guitar Hero Metallica coming to PSP too, and I believe they could be console selling games

True. I would certainly support that theory

I think these would be great on PSP. I wonder would Neversoft be able to get an accessory to use with the PSP for this game.

As much as Sony would like to keep it afloat, I don't think they have enough resources for it that wouldn't be better spent on the PS3, and the platform is all but dead to 3rd parties.

It is doing well in Japan though and could continue to be a popular platform for specialist games that do particularly well over there, but outside of that niche I think it's going to struggle. I wouldn't be surprised to hear Sony announce the PSP2 soon - if I was them it would be a portable console with identical internal hardware to the PS2, and the PS2 back catalogue available as digital downloads for it. They'd be mad not to.

It's a lack of third party support that is really killing it. Sony have really supported it well but games for it are just too high budget and don't sell well enough to get a good return compared to the DS. Even in Aisa they have lost third party support. Even if it is selling well it's only because of the monster hunter games that Asia are going made over. Only Monster Hunter is really selling well and some licensed anime tosh. Monster Hunter is also moving to Wii as well. It certainly was a poor year for the PSP. Crisis Core was pants but Loco Roco 2, Patapon 2 and GoW2 were definitely worth playing.

The keep making these pathetic updates to the PSP too like a slimmer version, and with improved screen. On paper the PSP is a great device: 4" screen, Wifi, Internet Browser, Media Playback and of course a game console. But Sony took these things and made them rubbish. The screen is terrible for videos (this may have improved with the latest PSP but I heard there are still problems), the Internet Browser is brutal (if they even improved the keyboard) and Media Playback is okay at best (the XMB isn't great to browse music and videos). If they made a few improvements and marketed it as both a game console and a Media Device, I'd buy the next one.
