Happy new year to everyone hopefully everyone is getting over this flu outbreak. looking for a project to start for the new year and have already come up with a problem. Am just wondering how you would remove the pedal cranks and bottom bracket on the bike as attached. I am sure it is pretty simple but cant see how to go about releasing them. Thanks for any help!

You need to hit the threaded end of that bolt with a hammer to remove the crank.
It should pop out with one sharp blow of a hammer.
If not, you may need to leave it soaking in WD40 for a while.
To remove the bottom bracket I think you will only need a large adjustable wrench/ spanner.

    More info here.

thanks for that hermy, brute force is normally the best solution. now to try build up the bike. can anyone recommend a good 5 speed derailleur?

You can cold stretch the frame so as a 9/10 speed wheel will fit. Sheldon Brown has a page on it too

i was just intending on using the rear wheel that was on it as it seems in decent condition and trying to fix up as cheap as possible but can you still get 5 speed derailleurs?

    I might have a 5 speed derailer - I'll check.

yeah i have the one that was on it, its pretty knackered though i think. im not near ready to put everything back on it so have enough time to think about how to have the gears. could even try my hand at the fixed craze!
