Uk Vodafone modems

Greetings technowizards! My vodfone e220 has packed up and refuses to work. The part of the cable (longest Cable) that connects into the plastic modem finally broke after months of looseness. The modem now no longer works (lights dont even blink) . I tried the shorter cable but it wont work either. Vodafone kindly informed us that as we are only 11 months into our contract we will have to pay for a replacement. We threatened to cancel our contract and they told us that if we do we will have to pay out our remaing contract. If we had been with them a year we would be entitled to a free upgrade. $4 weeks of no online access isnt an option as i am a student and need web-access for my studies, which explains my lack of funds also. As I dont want to bow to their demands or cancel the contract I was considering my options and thought of buying a new modem on ebay for example. As I couldnt see any irish sellers of vodafone modems I would like to know if UK modems such as the E220 or even the slimline E172 would work with my irish sim, I Know that my sim works in another Irish vodafone E172 hence my ability to type this query online. Any suggestions or answers would be appreciated as I would like to act quickly. I only have the lend of my mates modem for a brief period.

It would have to be unlocked, as UK Vodafone is completely different (from the SIM card point of view) to Irish Vodafone.
