I really really must quote this post.
I couldn't see myself ever using a drum mag with anything other then a LMG or a Patriot.

A friend has a drum mag for his G36C, he walks through batteries. I change my battery before a skrim and thats it for the day.

Mid caps are the way forward.

A mid cap is spring fed mag that holds 100 or so rounds, a lo-cap holds around 30 or real capacity for the mag.

High caps have a load of bbs just rattling round in them and need to be wound and are fail.

Drum mags are big plastic boxes with bbs rattling round in them and look stupid, are unrealistic, make loads of noise, fail more often and mean you dont ever get to reload, which is fun. These are considered epic fail, on anything other than an m60, saw, rpk, pkm etc.

High caps are high capacoty magazines, usually carrying ludicrous amounts of ammo.
Mid caps carry signifigantly less than high caps but still carry an amount that would be ricidulous on any battlefield.
Lo-caps/real-caps carry a realistic amount of bbs.

    Get mids.

If you get a load of high caps, you'll get mids eventually anyway, and trying to sell a load of hi-caps isn't easy.

Just to note, lo-caps and real-caps are different. Lo-caps hold around 60-80 rounds (depending on the mag, TM standard is usually 68), real-caps hold the same capacity as their real world counterparts, so 20/30/50 etc.
Most lo and real caps have extended followers (the bit that sits on the spring and makes contact with the bb) so that every last round is fed rather than leaving 4 or 5 in the magwell when you pull the mag out.

Im thinking of getting one of those "double" mags as well. Any ideas if there any good. Im sick of winding my hicaps, and before anyone suggests low/midcaps, I tried those and I usually end up losing them :(

You need to try it, there is nothing in the world like lining up a shot, pulling the trigger and nothing coming out of the barrel, the gut-wrenching terror as the other guy turns to look at you, you dropping out a mag like every action movie you have ever watched, then the ambush turns to a fire-fight. It is so awesome.

I always wonder, if there was only mids/lo caps in airsoft, would it be a much better game.

Cant help but think it would

You'll find most AEG's do have realistic, if not over-the-top ROF. You'll find a high ROF for a real M4 would be about 16rps. DBoys do about 15 stock, Star about 16 and G&G around 19.

There's still a place for high caps, there always will be. We've all used high caps starting off, some people still use them and just prefer them. It's a matter of personal choice, but it's fairly well accepted, even by high-cappers that restricted ammo games or restricted mag games provide some of the best craic in a skirmish event. There'll always be room for high caps in general skirmishing though.

The trade off is that they can fire longer without reloading, but the rattling can give them away. With mids or lo's you have to reload more often (some people like that, some don't) and you can't carry as much overall ammo, but you don't rattle and you don't have to wind. Most high-cappers, I've noticed, only carry 2-4 mags with them in a skirmish so that'd put them on a par with what most mid-cappers would carry (600-1000 rounds) so there really isn't a huge difference.

The only one I do have some qualms with, as do many others, is the use of box mags on assault rifles and smgs to turn them into mini support guns. Aside from it looking silly (which is just a taste thing, they look silly to me), they're a tad unfair on everyone else unless you're using it on a proper support gun where you have to deal with the burden of something oversized and overweight to make up for your high rof and sustained firing.

When I first started airsoft I was like "pfft...what moron would use low-caps or mid-caps" but now I wish I could find low/mid-caps for my UMP :(.

I find they just make the game much more interesting (and of course realistic).
