    Hi Folks,

Today is one of my gym workout days however I have had a head cold for the last 2 days. I was just wondering what the general conscensus is to working out with a cold. The gym is closed tomorrow and New Years day so i would be going 3 straight days without working out.

take a break get yourself right. Going to the gym could set you back even further. Young healthy people have trained\played sport with a cold\virus and suffered serious consequences. You could be fine but why risk it, trust me on this one.

Its like I wrote the teh above myself.Feeling bloated and sluggish after the xmas excesses i went to the gym yesterday.I was carrying a virus which i thought i could sweat out of me with a light weight routine and sauna.

    BIG MISTAKE!
Roll onto today and my illness is much worse, coupled with the head cold i now have a chesty cough and feel sheeite!

Pain in the f*&%$£ ar*e as its NYE tomorrow and ill be dying for it.

STAY AWAY FROM THE GYM TIL YOURE BETTER:mad:

Your probaly right lads. I had a minor bout of the cold yesterday and decided to go to the gym anyway and do a lights weights and cardio session and to be honest I fell a lot worse today. I think I have a chest cold aswell as a head cold because I feel tightness in teh chest and am also coughing sporadically. The few days rest might do me good anyway becasue I usually work out 6 days a week and havent taken a proper extended break in a very long time.

Apologies if they do but i was advised by a gym rat that was the best way to get rid of what i had ,which was a slight head cold and nothing more and seeing as i wasnt sneezing or coughing much,if at all i didnt think id be doing harm but its possible i suppose i infected other.

Well if im going down im taking a few with me:p

I actually find if you catch the cold early enough a good workout (or in particular a run) will sort you out nicely. Usually keeps the cold away if I do this. But has to be the first day or two of the cold.

I think the general rule is if the cold is in your head you should be OK. But if it's in your chest then stay away from the gym as you run the risk of getting a chest infection as well...

I am in the same boat as you guys.I have a shocking dose, headcold, sore throat, ear infection the works.:rolleyes:The more prudent side of me is overweened by the fact that I have discovered a love for cardio that I never knew I had.Throwing caution to the wind I reckon If I give it enough hammer and thongs the cold might subside.Roll on another 5k cycle tomorrow!:D

I know this is the extremes but I know of a healthy fit 32 year old man to died of a heart attach playing 5 a side 3 weeks ago. Doctors said the cold he had the previous week hadn’t fully cleared out of his system and weakened his heart and the added cardio stress caused the heart attack.

Cheers Siochain for the advice. I gave the gym a miss yesterday. Actually its getting worse becasue I feel like total crap today:mad:. Hopefully it will be gone by Friday so I can go back to the gym. No New Years eve partying for me aswell which is a bit of a bummer

    I don't understand.

You say you have trouble gaining weight and you freak out when you miss out on the gym for 3 days. I think you are getting your priorities all wrong.

Stay at home, rest and get better. When you feel better, take an extra day or two, eat well and then consider training again.

I see this is a day or two old so I hope you're feeling better now.
