Dont want to expand too much but has anyone here ever ended a relationship then met the same person years later and decided that they might have been the right person for them after all and got back together with their old partner.

Yes, I have seen it. I've also seen it fail second time around. It depends on the people and whether they are past the issues that broke them up the first time. Basically, you have to be a new person, but the same. If you know what I mean.

Agree with above. Yes I have seen it work. In fact of the best relationships I can think of, many were sequels. Think of it like the movies. Most sequels are crap, but if the script was good and the characters had more of a story to tell then the sequel can be even better than the first. You have to aim to be like the Godfather 2 and not Police Academy 2 though. How? By making sure the thing that broke you up is not carried into the new relationship.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

thanks story is basically this lived in a rural town about 18 years ago met a girl fell in love but for personal reasons had to move away again, she didnt come with me kept in touch for a short while but it petered out. My friend is working in said town and meets the girl in a bar who asks how I am he gives her my mobile and she sends a text asking how I am etc. Anyway I have been in a couple of long term relationships since then but havent really forgotten about this girl, so what do I do? was she just being friendly? my mate said she really seemed to genuinely miss me and she is single opinions please head is melted.

A very good friend of mine was seeing a guy from her home village 10 or 15 years ago, they split for a few good reasons but with no animosity, they re-met around 3 years ago and things just clicked, they have a little girl of a year and a half and got engaged in Venice in October, it's a lovely story and all true, hope it helps!

If the only reason you split before was something like geography and beyond your control i.e. the relationship itself was good then I say "go for it". Life is short.
Currently I am in a situation very similar to yours and we have no regrets.
    Good luck

you know what, you need to see this girl one way or another, if it works out - that would be fantastic, if, when you meet, you realise it's not the way you can remember it, you can finally move on and know it was not meant to be.

    Best of luck

Do it man!! Don't go in expecting a relationship or marriage or whatever - go into as it is, old friends meeting up. You're both obviously interested in exploring the avenue of reconnecting, so go in with an open mind, no expectations and see what happens.

    Best of luck.

    Yes it can work out...

I met and started seeing a girl almost 4 years ago now and - long story short - it didn't work out. BUT... we got back in contact earlier this year and are now living together since the summer, and engaged since Christmas Day :)

Go for it OP.. life's too short for regrets and "what if..."

what happens if you are both now married, and the same feelings you had twenty years ago surface. want to be together , but too many people could get hurt.

has anybody been in this position?

no, i dont think its a good idea to start up an old relationship,
i had an ex who recently came back from bein in tazmania for a year, and we thought it would be fabulous if we tried again, but the spark was gone, no matter how mad we were about each other.

hopefully mine is a one off case,
i really wish you all the best if you decide to do it again,
but just go in with your eyes open and dont have your heart on your sleeve

Reminds me of 'Martha' by Tom Waits.

If both people married you don't go there...

Partly on-topic, but here's a summarised / slightly altered version of what came up in conversation last night.....

"I got an intelligent SatNav for Christmas......why is it intelligent ? Well, when I typed in my ex's address and started to drive in that direction, the voice insisted 'turn around when possible'" :D:D
