    Try the re-format first.

You are sposed to hold the reset button for ten seconds if your PS3 freezes to force a soft reset-so I hear anyway. Some argue simply turning it off blows the laser although I dunno why it would.

Never ever turn your ps3 off at the back whilst its powered up unless you have no other choice (ie. Screen froze)

And if you turn it off properly, you won't corrupt your save files and you will be ableto turn on your ps3 with the sixaxis/ds3

yup will try to format it,it says it will take 3 and a half hours though so better leave it till tomorrow, nothing that important on the hard drive anyway, its just hard to believe switching it off at the back can damage it that much especially as it cost round 600euro (didnt have much choice as if froze),is there only a one year warranty with them??
    cheers for replies

1 year Sony warranty but I've heard rumours of an EU law that covers them for 2 years

And after the reformatting, unless you have a 120GB or less HDD, partition of 10 GB for Linux. In the heat of getting my 120 GB HDD (In July) I forgot.

I think all your settings and things on the users panel at the left of the XMB will all be safe

Aye. Your save files don't exist any more.

Besides. You can begin getting trophies in GTA now (assuming you didn't restart after the trophy patch)

I've had a similar problem since the last Update where the console freezes while trying to read disc, I usually have to reset it a couple of times before it runs. It goes to main PS3 menu but when I select game disc under VIDEO section it freezes up and I cannot do anything but shutdown using joypad. It has stopped playing DVD's altogether but Blue-rays play first time? It is really annoying especially if your just having a quick game. Has anyone else suffered this?

It happened (sort of) to me yesterday. Got casino royale on BD and it wouldn't work. Sound went out fine through scart but the picture wouldn't go through my hdmi cable to tv. "Range too big" or something along those lines was written in the middle of the screen. Its probably the film and the tv.

Go backa page or two on this forum and look for the "have you experienced the BlueRay of Death" thread. Gives contact numbers etc for Sony. If its just out of warranty they should still replace it for free for you.
