nikko is a smasher.. right beside a fairly popular irish bar too... couldn't find too many other bars in the area (not saying there isn't any more just didn't stumble into them!) so it worked out well until we moved up to the harbour area

I'd recommend the Serrano Hotel on Taylor Street which is just a few minutes walk from Union Square. My wife and I stayed there in September 07 and we found it to be very comfortable and quiet. If I was going back there I'd choose it again.

    See: http://www.serranohotel.com/

Depending on your budget and needs

I have stayed in the Powell Hotel (http://www.thepowellhotel.com/) and it is fine. Clean and inexpensive.

Nicer and pricier - http://www.westinstfrancis.com/ This was a sweet spot to stay and is right on the square. I managed to get a better rate by just showing up and asking for a room rather than pre-booking online.

If you've checked TA then you already know that you should stay at Hotel Chancellor :)

I never stay anywhere else when in that part of town.

The fairmont hotel. I lived in san fran for years. A lot of my mates stayed there. The resturaunt(Tong rooms) is amazing has to be seen. Really is has to be seen. Theres a small lake in the restuaraunt with a raft and a band playing music on it.Then theres artificial rain every so often.

Thinking of going back had they finished the lift near the pool? was still under construction when I was there.

+1 for The Chancellor, it is number 4 on TA for hotels in SF and gets consistently amazing reviews. It is a lovely European style hotel in a fantastic location. The manager takes great interest in the guests, I emailed him to see if he would give me a better rate on the room before I booked, he dropped the price by $50 per night and threw in $25 per day dining credit (I can recommend the hotel restaurant for brekkie!). His name is Wes Tyler and you can email him through the hotels website.

The Handlery is fantastic. Stayed there in Sept 08 for 6 nights.Upon hearing our trip incorporated our wedding anniversary, they upgraded us to a King size club room and provided a bottle of champagne for free!It perfectly located and very reasonably priced (try expedia.ie).It also has an outdoor swimming pool.I wouldnt even look beyond this hotel.

I recall some construction near the outdoor pool alright but I don't recall a lift being out of order. Apologies for my vagueness but we stayed in five or six different hotels in several states so I can't be definite.

Funny that you say it but, on booking, my wife mentioned to them (without telling me) that it was my 40th birthday and we got the same treatment.

(The general manager even came out to greet me on arrival! :o).

Its not a hotel, its a hostel, but its a brilliant place!!

Its called 'Hostelling International' and its on Mason Street. Its right next to the trams, and its really central to everything else, chinatown, busses to fishermans wharf, golden gate etc..

Its really nice, has internet, laundry rooms, all the usuals, kitchen area... and they even have a cool tv room which screens films each night like a little cinema. The staff are great too there, really helpful.
