    Is there any need for disk brakes?

    It's not the most aesthetically pleasing bike I've ever seen, if she's swayed by that kind of thing.

    re: the look - her call in the end I guess. I always liked the straight forks. Re: disk brakes, I suppose it's like suspension forks at this price point, all looks and reduces the spend on other components.

    Personally I like the look of the Focus Merluza, would be excellent for getting into touring. Also has the rack and mudguards (and indeed lights) included. Before you are scared off by the drops note it is relaxed geometry and has brakes on the flats. Claimed weight is a bit lighter than the Kona too despite having rack and mudguards.
