Anyone notice the large flocks of geese crossing the country over the last few days? I'm in county Meath and there flying over heading south, some of the flocks are up near jets in the sky its some sight another flock came very close to the house making a serious racket. I never seen it before. Whats the season for them anyway?

Are you around Kells by any chance?, I've heard that the geese use the towers there as navigational aids.

They are most likely Brent geese. I am nearly sure they are protected.

Huge numbers of Brents flock to St Annes park every year.

Had a crack at geese in Belgium over Christmas. Nr 2 steelshot ( lead's been outlawed over there since a few years ) in both barrels. Great shooting. The lads from the Dad's gunclub call them Nile Geese and they're regarded as an exotic intruder species over there, vermin to cut a long story short. The meat was no great shakes. I tried to fillet a few breasts to fry them but the texture of the meat was like strands of rope stuck together with superglue. Boiled it all up and fed it to Da's wirehair.

Grew up there greenpeter. Some good shooting over that way. The club the Da is in does nothing but walk up shoots and on the 22nd of December they bagged the following : 23 cocks, 2 mallards, 14 hares and 22 rabbits. That's between 6 guns, 7 beaters and 2 good pointers. It has taken them years of vermin control and tons of maize for feeding but man they have some shooting.
