Wiring a ceiling fan (en suite)

    Hi,

I'm replacing the old extractor fan in the en suite. It should get switched on when the light switch is flicked on and it has a timer.

After removing the old fan, coming down through ceiling the plaster, there are three wires.

Two of the wires are encapsulated in a grey outer cable. Of these two inner cables, one is coloured blue and the other is coloured brown.

The third wire is coming down from the ceiling separately in its own grey outer cable, and is coloured brown.

The fan accepts three cables. The connectors are marked L, N and L1.

Could someone explain to me what the correct connection would be?

    Thanks.
    Simon

The fan needs a neutral which is the blue wire - goes to the N terminal. One of the two brown wires will be a permanent live and the other will be live when the light is switched on. Unless you have a means of testing which live is the switched one, just connect the blue to N, one brown to L and the other to L1. If it does not work correctly, swop over the two brown wires.
