    Hi All

Recently brought a Ipod 2nd Generation ITouch for xmas, I think they are very good but Im disappointed with Itunes store and the apps that are on offer.

I understand the 1st Gen are/can be jailbroken but the 2nd Gen are not? Is this true or can someone point me in the direction when I can find info on how to jailbreak 2G Itouch?

    Thanks

I have bad news for you. It seems the people who jailbreaked the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 1G say they have no interest in jailbreaking the latest iPod Touch.

Currently we are not investigating the iPod touch 2G. Other people outside the Dev-Team are looking into this, but we are not at the moment. Please don’t hassle us with comments and requests about this, they’ll just be deleted and ignored. If we do look at this device it will be sometime in the New Year and we’ll inform you guys if and when we commence this work.

We would like to reiterate that this is not because -

    1. We are mean
    2. We are turning our back on the iPod touch community
    3. We have been paid off by JFK, Princess Diana or Elvis

    This is because -

    1. It’s not an iPhone
    2. We have been busy with the 3G unlock.
    3. We have been busy with the CCC talk.
    4. Only one of us has a iPod touch 2G (but we’ll see what Santa brings)
    5. Our employers don’t get as excited as us about hacking expensive pretty devices
    6. Unfortunately our partners, parents and pets need occasional attention too.

Just got a 32gb Itouch but am disgusted that I cannot do anything unless I register, etc., with Itunes. Is there any software package which makes the Itouch like my Creative Zen - drag and drop songs, pictures, videos, etc. ?

I know that I could jailbreak but I would prefer not to have to do anything that would make life difficult if I had to eventually use Itunes.

    tks

    - You don't have to register to use it, that's at your on dicretion
    - There is no drag and drop option on most iPod's
    - You can't jailbreak the new iPod's (which yours is one of)

Needless to say I know that I can 'use' the touch! But cannot transfer my videos, music, without registering. Is there no program that will allow full use of the touch without jailbreaking ?

you dont have to register to transfer music, images, videos etc to your touch or any ipod.
as amull87 already pointed out, its at your discression (sp) to register or not.

you cannot drag and drop onto any ipod, it all must go through itunes or another similar program.

once again, jailbreaking is not available for the new 32gb touch, ie 2nd generation.

just get in there and play about with itunes and see if you can get the hang of it. i heard so many bad things about it before i bought my first ipod, but if im honest i love itunes now.

He may be having the same issue I had with both my ipod touch gen 2 models, where you are forced to register before you can do anything (I got around this by switching my internet connection off).

For both ipods I initially selected "Register Later", but instead of being allowed to do that itunes continued with the registration process, something I could only exit by quiting the itunes application. I was being forced to register, and it wasn't until I cut the web connection that I could select register later.

Does using an itunes giftcard work?

I have an account on the itunes store, was able to set it up without credit card. It's easy to get around it.

You need to go to the store, search through the FREE applications, and click to 'purchase' one.

It will then ask you to create an account.

Go through the usual steps of creating an account, except now when selecting payment method, there should be a 'none' option.

Select this option, and away you go:)

worked for me anyway, hopefully I explained it well enough:)

Yeah! that's a new option!, I just checked that out myself...now I've removed my CC...

How do you filter apps to only see "free" ones..I used to know this but I haven't been on the iTMS in months!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 277 ✭✭Harpie

There's a 'Top 10 free Apps' section bottom right hand corner on the apps store, you should find some of the popular ones there :)

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 7,423 Mod ✭✭✭✭pleasant Co.

ah, there used to be an actually way to filter through free apps only so you weren't limitted to the top 100...I guess apple removed that option?

Nevermind, apple did remove that option: http://www.tuaw.com/2008/09/29/app-store-loses-all-free-apps-link/

Although the workaround is to do a powersearch, unfortunately then you have no way of organising things, so they'll be sorted at random.

Maybe type free apps into the search bar? I know this works on the app store when you use it on the ipod itself

You have to pay for the 2.0.0 firmware update as it introduced the App Store as well as a few other useful apps which Apple are trying to make money off, you can stay on 1.1.5 but to be able to install additional apps yo will need to upgrade.

As for the rest, it's quite easy to find all you want to know through Google!

Bottom line, jailbreaking allows you to add 3rd party apps which Apple may not approve for the App Store to your device mostly for free.
