ok i'll keep this as brief and simple as possible.

    Got PS3 for christmas.
    Modem is upstairs.
    HD widescreen is downstairs.
Wish to play multiplayer online downstairs plus the sister wishes to surf wirelessly without bringing laptop into my room

went to well known PC store.
    explained problem
was handed a wireless ADSL router and told that that should do the trick

took it home and followed the instructions to set it up.

at this point the LED's for the DSL connection is lit, the wireless led is lit( showing communication with the sisters laptop) and the power LED is lit.

opened IE on laptop and it says there is no dsl connnection.

windows network diagnostics give me the following message

cannot communicate with DNS server (192.168.1.1)

network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not recieve a response. Conact your ISP or network Admin.

Note: my original eircom-supplied netopia router works perfectly.
    1. ISP is eircom
    2. Both the laptop and PS3 commmunicate with the wireless
router but cannot conect to the net.
    3. The PC store helpdesk are telling me thats its a configuration problem
and to contact the manufacturers of the router

    Any suggestions

    Just a few questions.

Is the internet light on the new router flashing? To connect to Eircom DSL you need to use a username and password on the router itself. Its normally eircom and broadband1. It should be in the configuration menu on the router.

DSL and Wireless = A Big Royal Pain in The Ass. Having never had much luck with it except for swing and miss success I can only wish you luck. Needless to say if it were possible to upgrade to a cable connection, I highly recommend you do.

also let us know the model router you got aswell.

as cuddles worth said you need to enter the user name and password for the broadband on the new router, and maybe also dns servers which can be obtained if you have a look on the old netopia one.

Few other possibilities for problems might me the firewall on xp blocking you or wep keys for the wireless security entered incorrectly. That said the error you gave us does make it look like you simply forgot to enter the dns servers in the new router setup

try this Primary DNS: 213.94.190.194. Secondary DNS: 213.94.190.236 was the 1st hit on google so not sure if they are current and correct maybe some one with eircom broadband can confirm those for you.

PC worlds helpdesk (i assume its them?) obviously never heard of dns if you told them what the error was lol

Just as a side, wasnt your netopia router wilreless ??? guess you have one of the older ones.

    1. the phone line light/LED is lit but the led indicating that an internet connection is present doesn't light.

    2. when you say enter the password, where exactly do i enter this

have you connect the telephone line that connected to your eircom modem to the new wireless modem .if so try this

First click start then run type in cmd, which lwill aunch the command prompt.

Now type "ping 192.168.1.1" is you get response open up IE an type 192.168.1.1 in address bar, it should bring you to a web page and there should a option to change the settings. tells us what what they say .

From reading the tread it looks like you don’t know how to configure a router.
So I would suggest calling eircom first. But they will say they don’t support your router so you may have to get a pre- configured router from them (meaning buying a new router)
I have a similar router to the one you purchased Zyxel.
Make sure the line is connected
First to enter your password and username into the router open up Internet explorer and enter the following in the address bar 192.168.1.1:7080
This should bring you into the routers configuration page which will prompt you for a password / username. (Try the Zyxel manual)
Within their set your eircom broadband username + password (eircom should supply these) password is 25 characters long so make sure you write it down correctly.
Now with the Zyxel routers they have a setting in the wireless settings to disconnect any wireless connections after a certain time frame. Change this time to 99999 sec’s.

Try your internet now it should work

For the ps3 connection to the internet you will have to enable ports on the router to get full access to all the features on PS3 (online gaming, online chat). Ring eircom they should have the ports and should be able to talk you through it

    Hope this helps
